SAN FRANCISCO – Sophomore Leigha Devine finished play at the 2021 U.S. Women's Open on Friday at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Devine, who is believed to be the first individual in Rutgers women's golf history to secure a spot at the prestigious event, was one of 30 amateurs in the field.
Devine finished with a two-round 164 (86-78), highlighted by her seven-over-par 78 during Friday's second round. Devine produced two birdies and eight pars in round two and closed out her tournament with four birdies and 12 pars overall.
In her second collegiate season, Devine played in seven events for the Scarlet Knights, averaging 76.81 over 21 rounds. The Windsor, Colorado, native carded a 76-74-81 (+15) at the Big Ten Championship last month and posted her best finish of the spring with a tied-for-ninth result (75-74-77) at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate on March 30.
"This week was an incredible experience for Leigha," said head coach Kari Williams. "We're really proud of the way she came back and played today. I could tell she got way more comfortable out here with each shot. The improvement from Round one to Round two was amazing in how Leigha was able to navigate the rough and these challenging greens. She is going to get better and grow from competing out here this week.
Rutgers enjoyed another productive season under Williams as the Scarlet Knights carded the lowest 54-hole score in program history at the River Landing Classic on March 9 in Wallace, North Carolina. Junior Maeve Rossi also produced the second-lowest 54-hole individual scorecard (-4) at the River Landing Classic, while sophomore Anna-Maria Diederichs earned Big Ten Golfer of the Week accolades after she tied for 11th on March 24 at the Pinetree Invitational in Kennesaw, Georgia.

One of nine national golf championships conducted by the United States Golf Association (USGA), The U.S. Open is the oldest of the LPGA Tour's five major championships. Established 75 years ago in 1946, the U.S. Women's Open is the only event to have been recognized as a major by the LPGA since the group's founding in 1950.
"The U.S. Women's Open was a huge stepping stone in my journey of golf," Devine said. "The course played hard and tested me as I hoped it would. Over the week, I was able to see exactly where my game shows promise and where I need to improve to get to the next level. I am more than excited to get back on the grind and continue developing my game. Getting to compete alongside some of my all-time favorite golfers in my first professional event was something I will never forget and I hope to be back soon."In her second collegiate season, Devine played in seven events for the Scarlet Knights, averaging 76.81 over 21 rounds.
