Three-for-Three: Jones Punches Ticket to U.S. Amateur Championship
Jul 08 | Men's Golf
PLYMOUTH, Mass. – Incoming freshman Weston Jones captured an individual title at the USGA Plymouth qualifier Thursday night in Plymouth, Massachusetts to secure a spot at the 2021 U.S. Amateur Championship. Jones' win makes it three from Rutgers men's golf – along with rising junior Xavier Marcoux and rising sophomore Rhett Sellers – who have secured spots at this year's U.S. Amateur, held from Aug. 9-15 in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
Jones carded a four-under-par 141 (73-68) across 36 rounds to secure his individual title at the qualifier, two strokes ahead of runner-up Andrew Diramio. Jones was one of just two individuals to finish under par in the 77-player field at the Pinehills Golf Club, highlighted by a four-under-par, bogey-free 68 in round two. Jones finished the tournament with six birdies and 27 pars.
Pegged as the top signee from the state of Massachusetts in the 2021 class by Junior Golf Magazine, Jones enjoyed a standout scholastic career at Lincoln-Sudbury, where he led his team to a 2019 state title as a junior with a two-under-par 70 to claim individual honors at the state championship. Most recently, Jones earned a two-person title at the Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship on May 12, as he and his teammate became the youngest winners in the tournament's history with their combined 13-under-par 131.
Jones is one of three incoming freshmen set to compete this fall for head coach Rob Shutte along with Cade Anderson and Garrett Kessler.
