Leigha Devine and freshman
Lucrezia Rossettin produced three-under-par scorecards for Rutgers women's golf during the opening round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic on Monday in Wolcott, Colorado. Devine and Rossettin are tied for 11th and just three strokes off the lead with two rounds to play at the Red Sky Golf Club.
The Scarlet Knights are tied for eighth after their even 288 in the first round. Northern Arizona and East Tennessee State are tied for first at nine under, followed by Brigham Young (-7). Kerstin Fotu (Brigham Young) and Anna Catherine Krekling (Denver) are atop the leaderboard at six under.
"I was happy with the way we finished our rounds today," said head coach
Kari Williams. "It was a long afternoon on a challenging golf course and our team stayed focused and committed to our game plan. Lucrezia put together a great round out here and Leigha was relaxed and confident from tee to green. We're excited to come back out tomorrow for Round two.
Competing in her home state of Colorado, Devine fired off a bogey-free 69 in the first round with birdies on holes 1, 2 and 14.
"It felt awesome to play in my home state in front of my family," Devine said. "I'm really comfortable out here on this course and was able to play freely. Tomorrow's round will be another opportunity to come out and see what we can do as a team."
Playing in just her third collegiate tournament, Rossettin produced a team-high four birdies and added an eagle on a par 5 to close out her first round.
"Finishing the round with an eagle was a fun way to end the day," Rossettin said. "I was confident with my putter and rolled the ball well on these challenging greens."
Junior
Sun Hwang and
Rikke Nordvik are tied for 60th with identical three-over-par 75 scorecards, followed by senior captain
Maeve Rossi, who is tied for 97th.
Tuesday's second round begins at 11:50 a.m. ET off the first hole.
