PISCATAWAY, N.J. – When
Adam Korsak launched his first punt against Michigan last weekend in Ann Arbor, multiple continents were tuned into the ABC broadcast. Korsak, a native of Melbourne, Australia, had his whole support system tuned in to watch the game from just under 10,000 miles away.
Â
"The game back home was on ESPN, which was one of the first games everyone was able to see over there since I've been here," Korsak said. "A lot of people reached out to me after that game."
Â
Whether Down Under or in the United States, people have taken notice of the Rutgers football standout, who has established himself as one of the top players at his position in the country. Korsak is first in the Big Ten Conference and fourth nationally with a 50.3 punting average on 16 attempts, and thanks to Korsak's leg, the Scarlet Knights lead the country in net punting with a 48.31 mark through their first four games.
Â
During RU's 3-1 start to the season, Korsak has drilled 10 of his 16 attempts this season inside the 20-yard line, with three being downed at the opponent one-yard line. The team captain has already earned two Ray Guy Punter of the Week awards and earned Co-Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week laurels for his performance in RU's 17-7 road win at Syracuse earlier this fall.
Â
Korsak was outstanding against the Orange, as he posted a 52.2 average and 51.7 net punt on six attempts. Five of his six punts fell inside the 20-yard line with no touchbacks, which included a 69-yarder that settled at the 1-yard line.
Â
The performance was no surprise to head coach
Greg Schiano.
Â
"He's special," Schiano said after the Syracuse game. "He changed the field position several times in that game. We're fortunate to have him."
Â
Korsak – who also earned national honors for his performance in Rutgers' season opener against Temple – is quick to acknowledge the rest of his teammates for any individual honors he has collected thus far.
Â
"It's a collective effort with the entire punt team and our coaching staff," Korsak said. "It's cool to get awards and get recognized, but it's all about helping our team win. We've been together for more than three years, so it's a very experienced unit and we're looking to have continued success."
Â
Fans can expect more success from Korsak, who has established himself as one of the top punters to ever kick "On the Banks." Since arriving on campus in 2018, Korsak has played in 37 career games, all as a starter. Korsak holds three of the top-five best punting average seasons in school history and holds a career average of 43.7 yards per punt, second in school history.
Â
Korsak has also booted 38 attempts at least 50 yards, 10 of 60 or more yards and has pinned 85 inside the 20 with only five touchbacks (2.3 percent).
Â
The 2020 Second Team All-Big Ten selection also credits the team's commitment to excellence on special teams as a reason why he has been able to do so well during his tenure in Piscataway.
Â
"Having coaches so invested in special teams while also having Coach Schiano heavily involved in special teams is a huge advantage," Korsak said. "The preparation we put into special teams is evident. The buy-in from everyone, you can't fake that. We're four weeks in and that effort is still all there. I'm so thankful for everyone's effort in this program when it comes to special teams."
Â
When Rutgers takes the field Saturday against No. 11 Ohio State, everyone in SHI Stadium will know what type of impact No. 94 can have on the game. While Korsak's ability to change momentum with one just a swing of a leg is apparent, he is just worried about making everyone around him better.
Â
"I try to be the best version of me for the rest of my teammates each day," Korsak said. "I try to bring that energy each day and encourage everyone around me both on and off the field."
