Jan 04 | Wrestling
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Greg Bulsak (197) earned Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week honors after his individual title at the 2021 Matmen Open. Bulsak went 4-0 at the tournament, which included a win over then-No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi (Pittsburgh) in the 197-pound title match.
Bulsak is the first Scarlet Knight to earn a Big Ten weekly honor since current assistant coach Anthony Ashnault, who was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week after he defeated then-No. 1 Matthew Kolodzik (Princeton) on Feb. 3, 2019 in Piscataway. Bulsak shares this week's honor with Maryland's Kyle Cochran.
Bulsak defeated Bonaccorsi - who entered the open ranked No. 2 in the country and finished as the runner-up at the 2021 NCAA Championships – by 3-2 decision in the Matmen Open final. Bulsak finished his tournament 4-0, which included two major decisions and a win over No. 26 Braxton Amos (Wisconsin) in the championship semifinals. Bulsak outscored his four opponents 35-9.
Bulsak is 12-0 this season with a team-high six wins over ranked opponents.
With Bulsak moving to No. 3 at 197 pounds according to Amateur Wrestling News, RU features three individuals ranked within the top-five of their respective weight classes. Sebastian Rivera (141), who also earned individual honors at the Matmen Open, is ranked No. 3, while John Poznanski (184) is No. 5. The trio is a combined 34-0 this season.
Rutgers hosts Indiana on Friday at Jersey Mike's Arena. The dual is slated for a 7 p.m. ET start and will stream on Big Ten Network.
