No. 12 Wrestling Dominates Indiana for 11-0 Start

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 12 Rutgers wrestling (11-0, 1-0) opened the Big Ten Conference dual season with a dominant 29-7 win over Indiana (2-1, 0-1), on Friday night in front of 3,093 fans at Jersey Mike's Arena. No. 4 Sebastian Rivera (141), No. 5 John Poznanski (184) and No. 30 Dylan Shawver (125) all delivered wins over ranked Hoosiers, as the Scarlet Knights secured their first 11-0 start to a season in program history.

No. 26 Jackson Turley (174) worked a tech fall, while Rivera, Shawver and No. 7 Greg Bulsak (197) all added majors against Indiana. Poznanski picked up one of the biggest wins of his collegiate career with a 4-2 decision over No. 8 DJ Washington.

QUOTEABLES
"That match could have gone a lot of different ways. Any time you win in this conference, it's a good thing. But we're right back at it. We have to turn the page really quick, wake up at 7 a.m., get on a bus, get to the airport, and get out to Madison," - Head Coach Scott Goodale

HOW IT HAPPENED
  •  Shawver opened the dual with his first ranked opponent of the season in No. 25 Jacob Moran. Shawver scored five points in the second period and added five more in the third en route to the 13-2 major.
  • Devon Britton (133) held his ranked opponent to just a decision, while the Scarlet Knights rolled muscled three more wins before intermission. Rivera exploded for eight points in the first period to highlight his 19-5 major decision over No. 26 Cayden Rooks. No. 19 Michael VanBrill (149) and Robert Kanniard (157) followed with decisions to give RU a comfortable 14-3 lead at intermission.
  • Rutgers added four more consecutive wins out of the break. Andrew Clark (165) produced his first-career Big Ten dual victory with his 3-0 decision over Sammy Cokeley before Turley collected three four-point near falls on his way to a 20-2 tech fall against Sean Grim. Turley's bonus points made it 22-3 with three bouts to go.
  • The match of the night came between Poznanski and Washington. The Hoosier held an early 2-1 lead after his first-period takedown before Poznanski went to work on top. The 2021 All-American rode out Washington for the duration of the second period and forced his opponent to concede a stall point. Poznanski then added an escape in the third period for the 4-2 decision.
  • Bulsak closed out the dual with his fifth major decision of the season in a 9-1 win against Nick Willham.
NOTEABLES
  • Rutgers secured its first 11-0 start to a dual season in program history. The Scarlet Knights opened the 1960 season 10-0-1 and have competed on the varsity level since 1930.
  • Rivera is now two wins away from 100 for his collegiate career. The four-time All-American arrived "On the Banks" with 73 wins on his resume during his tenure at Northwestern, where he was a two-time Big Ten Champion.
  • Rivera also kept his 100 percent bonus rate intact with his 19-5 major decision over 2021 NCAA qualifier Graham Rooks. Rivers has produced six tech falls, three major decisions, two pins and two forfeits in 13 matches this season.
  • Poznanski's win over No. 8 DJ Washington was his second over a top-10 foe during his first two collegiate seasons. Poznanski also defeated No. 3 Lou DePrez (Binghamton) last season at the NCAA Championships.
  • Bulsak, Poznanski, Rivera and VanBrill are a combined 47-0 this season.
  • Goodale is six dual wins away from 200 for his career as head coach at Rutgers.
  • Rutgers moved to 6-1 all-time against Indiana.
