EATONTON, Ga. – Junior Leigha Devine and sophomore Rikke Nordvik carded under-par scorecards and top-10 individual results to help Rutgers women's golf to a top-five finish at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational on Sunday in Eatonton, Georgia.
The Scarlet Knights produced a seven-over-par 295 during the final round - the fourth-lowest round of the day - to move up three spots on the team leaderboard for a fourth-place finish in the 14-team field. East Tennessee State captured the team title with its 23-over-par 887, followed by Mercer (+34) and North Florida (+35). Sophie Bert (East Tennessee State), Mindy Herrick (North Florida) and Hollie Muse (East Tennessee State) all tied for firth with their one-over-par 217s.
"I am happy with the way the team played today," said head coach Kari Williams. "Leigha and Rikke posted great rounds for us and did a great job of giving themselves birdie chances throughout the round. Lu bounced back with a nice round today as well. We'll look to build on this performance as we head to our next event in two weeks."
Devine was the biggest mover for RU on Sunday, as she shot up 27 spots with her three-under-par 69 in the final round to tie for seventh. Devine rolled in five birdies and carded an eagle on hole six to tie for the lowest individual round of any of the tournament's 80 participants.
"Today was a great weather day for scoring and I was able to get in the groove a little and hit good shots followed by nice putts," Devine said. "Going four under in the last 3 was an amazing feeling and the type of golf that keeps you coming back. This was a great tournament for the team and I and we are ready to continue our strong play for the rest of the season."
Nordvik, who produced an even 72 during Saturday's second round, added a one-under-par 71 on Sunday. Nordvik opened the day with a birdie on hole seven and added two more birdies to move up 15 spots to also tied for seventh.
"I had momentum today that carried over from yesterday's round," Nordvik said. "I was able to play aggressively and gave myself a lot of scoring opportunities. I'm happy we were able to play well and move up the leaderboard to finish the event strong."
Rookie Lucrezia Rossettin also rebounded from day two with her three-over-par 75 to tie for 41st. Senior captain Maeve Rossi (T/54) and junior Sun Hwang (T/71) rounded out the team scorecard.
The Scarlet Knights will take their strong finish into their next tournament at the Julie Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational from March 7-8 in Fairfax, California.
