PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior Tess Fisher of Rutgers tennis was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Guiding RU to a 2-0 weekend, Fisher made history as the first Scarlet Knight to record a singles win over a ranked opponent.
In RU's win over St. John's, Fisher became the first in program history to earn a singles victory over a ranked individual opponent. The captain clinched the match with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 win SJU's Mouna Bouzgarrou at the No. 1 spot. It marked the first ranked win recorded in Rutgers history, as Bouzgarrou is ranked No. 112 in the latest national ITA rankings.
Fisher also contributed a doubles win at the No. 1 spot with freshman Minchae Kim against SJU. The duo is undefeated as a pair this season with a 3-0 record in doubles action.
Overall, Fisher added two singles wins and a doubles win to lift Rutgers to a 2-0 weekend, defeating St. John's, 5-2, and Drexel, 6-1. Against the Dragons, Fisher came back from a first set setback to win her match at the No. 1 spot by a score of 1-6, 7-5, 10-5.
The weekly honor marks the first career Big Ten Athlete of the Week recognition for Fisher.
Up next, Fisher and the Scarlet Knights are set for two road trips this weekend, visiting UMass on Saturday, February 12 and UConn on Sunday, February 13.
