PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 9 Rutgers men's lacrosse continued its unbeaten start to the season with a 13-10 victory over Marist on Wednesday afternoon at SHI Stadium.
Colin Kirst backstopped the team to a win as he tied his career-high with 19 saves.
Mitch Bartolo and
Ross Scott each had a hat trick to lead the offense, with
Ronan Jacoby and
Michael Sanguinetti each adding a pair of goals.
Brian Cameron,
Shane Knobloch and
Eric Civetti each had one goal apiece.
RU outshot Marist 63-48.
Jonathan Dugenio was 20-of-27 on faceoffs, as RU capitalized with a 48-28 advantage on ground balls. All-American long-stick midfielder
Ethan Rall had a huge game with six ground balls and a career-high five caused turnovers.
Marist scored first, but RU countered with a 3-0 run to give them a lead that they would hold throughout the game. The Scarlet Knights expanded that lead to 7-4, then 10-5, and held off a late charge by the Red Foxes to secure the victory.
Quotable
"It was a great midweek, early season game. I'd like to see us keep getting better from each game and each opportunity and this was a good one for us to continue to grow from.
Colin Kirst was great with 19 saves, he certainly helped us run in transition.
Jonathan Dugenio was great facing off and getting us possessions. We took advantage of some looks on offense. Give Marist credit, they are probably one of the best teams in their conference and a NCAA Tournament caliber team."
Head Coach
Brian Brecht
"I'm proud of how our team handled the game. It was physical, a bit up and down, but we settled in and got our sticks moving, especially in the second quarter. I'm happy with how we played overall."
Team Captain
Ryan Gallagher
