Rivera faced No. 6 seed Cole Matthews (Pittsburgh) in his championship quarterfinal on Friday morning and landed the first takedown of the match before Matthews responded with an escape and late takedown for a 3-2 lead after one. Rivera tied the match at 3-3 with an escape in the second period and cut Matthews to trail 4-3 with two minutes to go.
With 49 seconds left in the match, Matthews landed the final takedown of the match for a 6-3 lead. Rivera escaped and forced a stalling point, but Matthews would escape with a 7-5 decision. The loss was the first for Rivera this season, as he currently holds a 26-1 record with 24 wins coming by bonus.
Bulsak muscled back-to-back wins during the morning session, beginning with an 8-0 major decision over No. 20 seed Jacob Koser (Navy). Up 3-2 in the third period in his next match against No. 11 seed Thomas Penola (Purdue), Bulsak caught the Bouilermaker at the edge of the circle for a takedown and a 5-3 win. The win over Penola avenged a 4-3 loss from the Big Ten Championships earlier this month.
Shawver and Poznanski both went 1-1 on the day, as Shawver worked a 10-7 decision over No. 25 seed Caleb Smith (Appalachian State). Shawver landed takedowns in all three periods to advance in his consolation bracket, eventually losing to No. 18 seed Noah Surtin (Missouri).
Poznanski also secured a revenge win from Big Tens in his rematch with No. 19 seed Isaiah Salazar (Minnesota), using a four-point tilt in the third period to earn a 10-7 win. Poznanski followed with a tough 9-4 loss to No. 11 seed Jonathan Loew (Cornell) to close out his season.
Olivieri and VanBrill all wrestled hard in their second-round consolation loses. Olivieri faced No. 12 seed Micky Phillippi (Pittsburgh) and landed a takedown on the Panther before he lost by a tight 4-2 decision. VanBrill was scoreless with No. 6 seed Jonathan Millner (Appalachian State) through two period until Millner scored a reversal and takedown in the closing minutes for the 5-1 result.
