FAIRFAX, Calif.– Junior
Leigha Devine carded a two-under-par scorecard in the second round to highlight action for Rutgers women's golf on Monday during the first day of the 2022 Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational in Fairfax, California.
The Scarlet Knights improved 14 strokes in the second round and are 12th with their 616 scorecard. No. 9 San Jose State leads the team race with its 12-under-par 564, followed by No. 1 Stanford (+2) and San Francisco (+3). Washington's Camille Boyd leads the field with her seven-under-par 137 (67-70).
"We played much better this afternoon in Round two," said head coach
Kari Williams. "Leigha had a great round going with a lot of good birdie chances. Rikke and Lu bounced back nicely with better play as well. It's a challenging golf course that rewards good golf shots and there are many scoring opportunities to take advantage of. Tomorrow will be a great chance for us to compete and finish strong."
Devine shot up 15 spots on the leaderboard with her two-under-par 70 in the second round, as she rolled in a team-best four birdies on holes one, nine, 12 and 13. Devine also added three birdies in the opening round and is tied for 15th in the 74-player field heading into Tuesday's final round.
"Today at Meadow Club was an absolute treat," Devine said. "The weather was very favorable and something we haven't seen a lot lately. Getting to compete against the top-ranked teams in the country is only going to make us better and I think that's what it did for me today. It brought out some of my best shots. The two hiccups to close out my rounds were small mistakes but I'm excited to get out there tomorrow and see what we as a team can do."
