Sand, Callaway Hit Streaks Continue In Series Opening Loss At Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – The weekend series between the two top teams in runs scored in the Big Ten opened up on Friday with host Nebraska topping Rutgers softball, 12-4, in six innings at Bowlin Stadium.
The Scarlet Knights dropped to 23-13 overall and 1-3 in conference action. The Cornhuskers, who are coming off last weekend's series win over then-No. 19 Michigan, won their eighth straight to improve to 23-9 overall and 3-0 in league play.
The Scarlet Knight-Cornhusker series continues on Saturday with first pitch slated for 2:00 p.m. (ET).

| STATISTICALLY SPEAKING |
- Despite the loss, both Kyleigh Sand and Gabrielle Callaway continued their respective hitting streaks. Sand upped her streak to 10-straight games going 2-for-3, while Callaway improved her streak to nine behind her team-leading sixth home run.
- Callaway also led RU with two runs scored and joined Katie Wingert and Taylor Fawcett with a run batted in.
- Lefthander Jaden Vickers dropped to 14-4 on the year. She struck out four along the way.

- Rutgers got a trio of runs in its first at-bat. With two outs and the bases filled with Scarlet Knights, Katie Wingert delivered a base hit to left field to score Payton Lincavage. On the bobble in the outfield, Gabrielle Callaway continued running to reach home and make it a 2-0 lead. Taylor Fawcett followed with an RBI fielder's choice scoring Maddie Lawson.
- Nebraska collected its first run in the bottom of the first off an RBI single by Mya Felder.
- The hosts took the lead in the second on a sacrifice fly and home run. Ava Bredwell flew out to left for the RBI and Brooke Andrews homered to center for three more runs and a 5-3 Cornhuskers edge.
- Gabrielle Callaway responded by taking the first pitch to lead off the third to straightaway centerfield field cutting RU's deficit to a run.
- The Cornhuskers, however, got the run back in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot of their own from Abbie Squier to stay in front 6-4.
- Nebraska closed out the contest knocking in six runs on four hits and an error in the sixth. The Cornhuskers opened with back-to-back singles and the bases were loaded for a miscue on a shallow pop-up to score a run. Sydney Grey cleared the base runners on a double to the wall in left-center, while Squier ended the game on her second home run of the contest, a two-run walk-off to center.\
