PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 13 Rutgers women's lacrosse (11-3, 2-2) used a late scoring run to defeat Wagner (5-8, 3-1), 13-11, on Wednesday night in Piscataway. Tied 9-9 with a minute to play in the third quarter, the Scarlet Knights fired off four consecutive goals to secure their 11th win of the season - the most for the program since the 2010 campaign.
Junior captain Cassidy Spilis produced a season-high seven points on six goals and an assist, while graduate student Stephanie Kelly netted four goals in the win. Ashley Campo dished out a team-best three assists for four points. Sophomore Kate Carolonza added two crucial goals in the second half to help contribute to the out-of-conference win.
RU out shot the Seahawks, 35-21, won the battle on the draw, 18-9, and forced the visitor into 20 turnovers, but Wagner was able to stick around thanks to its 4-for-5 performance on free-position attempts. Junior defenders Meghan Ball and Jessica Beneducci and sophomore Ashley Moynahan each caused two turnovers. Plugged into the game in the second half, rookie Caleigh Forti notched her second win of her career with two saves.
Rutgers scored the first two goals of the game, which included scores from Campo and Spilis for an early 2-0 lead. Both teams would trade scores down the stretch in the quarter before A score from Sophia Colver off the FPA made it 4-3 Seahawks at the end of the first.
Spilis went to work in the second quarter with three goals in a span of eight minutes. Her final one of the stretch made it 7-5 Rutgers with 6:51 to play before the half. However, Wagner closed with a goal to make it a one-goal game at halftime.
Down 9-8 with 9:24 left in the third quarter, Rutgers tallied three straight goals to regain the lead for good. Carolonza took a pass from Hartshorn and tied the game at the six-minute mark in the quartern. RU then scored back-to-back goals in the final minute. Carolonza found Kelly for a 10-9 lead, while Spilis intercepted a pass in the closing seconds of the quarter and fired down field to an open Kelly, who finished for a 11-9 lead heading into the fourth.
Back-to-back goals from Spilis in the final 15 minutes provided RU with a big enough cushion for the win, as her second made it 13-9 with just under six to play. Wagner added two late, but Rutgers left with its seventh home win of the season and 11th overall.
The Scarlet Knights return to action against San Diego State on Saturday for a 5 p.m. start at SHI Stadium.
