COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 3 Rutgers men's lacrosse made its second all-time appearance in the Big Ten Tournament championship game but fell to No. 1 Maryland on Saturday evening. The Scarlet Knights fell to 13-3 overall, with the Terps improving to 14-0, remaining the lone unbeaten team in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse.
Maryland was the lone Big Ten team to defeat the Scarlet Knights this season, who went 5-0 against the rest of the league. That included two victories over a ranked Ohio State team, as the Scarlet Knights had advanced to the Championship Game behind a 12-10 win over No. 12 Ohio State on Thursday evening. Over the past two seasons, Rutgers is 0-4 against Maryland and 22-3 against all other opponents.
"Maryland is a very good team," head coach
Brian Brecht said. "That's probably the best team in college lacrosse I've seen over the past five to ten years. We need to do a better job when playing against them in taking care of ourselves and not having self-inflicted wounds. I'm disappointed because I do think we have a good team. I love our guys, I think they work incredibly hard, they practice hard. They prepare well. They are great young men that do everything the right way. I feel bad that we haven't played well when matching up with a team like Maryland if we're going to be successful."
Rutgers has 13 wins on the season, a new program record. Rutgers' three losses on the season came against the teams currently ranked No. 1 (Maryland) and No. 2 (Princeton) in the NCAA RPI metric.
Maryland led 47-35 in shots and 42-26 in ground balls. They won 21-of-28 faceoffs.
Rutgers was led by two goals from
Brian Cameron.
Mitch Bartolo,
Ross Scott,
Ronan Jacoby,
Ryan Gallagher and
Ethan Rall also scored on the day.
Colin Kirst had 12 saves. He now has 186 saves on the season, tied for 10th all-time on RU's single-season list.
Rutgers was represented by three players on the All-Tournament team.
Mitch Bartolo,

The game went back and forth early in the first. Rutgers' first two goals came from
Mitch Bartolo (off a
Ronan Jacoby assist) and
Ronan Jacoby (off a
Mitch Bartolo assist) for an early 2-2 tie.
Maryland struck from there, scoring the next six goals for an 8-2 lead. That score would be the tally heading into the halftime, with the RU offense stymied over the final 28 minutes of the first half.
In the second half,
Ryan Gallagher had the first tally after the intermission. The RU captain had a great individual effort, wrapping around the goal to score and cut the lead to 8-3.
Maryland came back with the next two goals before a special play by All-American long-stick midfielder
Ethan Rall. Rall scooped a ground ball and raced the length of the field to tally a goal for RU, his first goal of the season.
Ross Scott then tallied his first of the day, giving RU back-to-back goals for the first time in the game. However, the stout Terrapins offense was able to close out the game and give the title to the home team.
"For everyone on the roster, for next week, next month and next year, playing in a big-time game like this is a great experience," Brecht said. "For all our returning players, for all our graduates, it's a great experience. Not a lot of people get a chance to play in a championship game. These memories, you don't get them back, so you want them to be positive. Thursday night was a great night for us. Spending time together this week having the opportunity to play for a championship was a great experience. All the guys in our locker room have done a great job over the past two years, to be the No. 2 team in a great Big Ten conference, to be in position to play in the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back years. At the end of the day, they should feel very proud of what they've been able to accomplish."
Rutgers will look to continue its postseason in next week's NCAA Tournament, as the Scarlet Knights are well-position to earn an at-large bid to play in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. The full NCAA Tournament bracket will be revealed on Sunday night on ESPNU at 9 p.m.
