Devine's 7-under 209 smashes Badger Invitational 54-hole record by four strokes
VERONA, Wis. (September 20, 2022) – Leigha Devine kicked off the 2022-23 season in historic fashion, tying for first in the Badger Invitational while also breaking the tournament 54-hole record by four strokes. Her 7-under 209 shattered the previous mark of 213 shared by Federica Torre (Old Dominion, 2021) and Carlie Werwie (Wisconsin, 2010),
As a team, the Scarlet Knights finished in solo 8th place in the 13-team event, led by Devine (t-1) and Maeve Rossi (t-24) on the individual end. RU played the Par 3s at 3-over par, which was third-best among the 13 competing schools, as was the team's 167 pars.
Devine entered the final round 3 strokes back after a 3-under 69 on Monday, highlighted by a hole-in-one on the 12th hole. She began Tuesday's round on the 8th hole and sat at 3-under after her first 11 holes of the day. Devine made a huge push to close out her round, birdieing the 1st, 4th and 5th holes to storm all the way up to a tie for first place at 7-under for the tournament.
Montgomery Ferreira of Notre Dame, who entered the final round as the leader, also finished the tournament at 7-under. With no playoff taking place, the result was a tie between Devine and Ferreira.
The title was the first for a Rutgers golfer since Anna-Maria Diederichs won the Jackrabbit Invitational in the spring.
"It was a great day out on the golf course today!" Devine said. "I was lucky enough to have it all come together and take advantage of some big opportunities. It's an unbelievable feeling to get my first win at a course like University Ridge. I'm looking forward to taking this momentum into the next tournament with my teammates!"
Devine's 54-hole mark of 209 was a career-low, as was her final-round 68 on Tuesday. She also played the Par 3s at 4-under par, which led the field.
Maeve Rossi had a consistent week of golf, going 73-75-73 for a total score of 221, good for a tie for 24th on the individual leaderboard. Her 2-under scoring on Par 5s led the Scarlet Knights.
