Football Loses Big Ten Opener to Iowa

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers football (3-1, 0-1) lost to Iowa (3-1, 1-0), 27-10, on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd at SHI Stadium. The announced attendance of 53,117 was the fifth largest home crowd in stadium history. The Scarlet Knights allowed just one offensive touchdown and outgained the Hawkeyes, 361-277, in the loss. 
 
DB Christian Izien registered his second double-digit tackle effort of the season and the seventh of his career with 15 tackles and a sack. LB Tyreem Powell and DL Rene Konga also recorded sacks, while LB Deion Jennings had 10 stops with two for loss.
 
On offense, QB Evan Simon threw for a career-high 300 yards and an 18-yard touchdown pass to WR Aron Cruickshank, while WR Shameen Jones led the team with 71 receiving yards on five catches.
 
FIRST HALF
Rutgers orchestrated a scoring drive on its opening possession, as it drove 66 yards and finished with a 28-yard field goal form PK Jude McAtamney. A 33-yard pass from Simon to Jones highlighted the opening series, as the Scarlet Knights picked up three first downs to begin play. 
 
RU held the Hawkeyes to just a touchdown in the first 15 minutes of play, as Iowa held a 7-3 lead after the first quarter. The Hawkeyes added 10 points in the second for a 17-3 lead at halftime. Rutgers held Iowa to just 57 rushing yards in the first half. 
                                             
SECOND HALF
Rutgers allowed just one touchdown in the second half and scored its first touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter. The Scarlet Knights tallied a five-play, 63-yard scoring play as Simon found Cruickshank for an 18-yard score with 11:15 left in the game. Iowa would add a field goal with 6:08 to play and hold RU off the scoreboard down the stretch to seal the road win. 
 
UP NEXT
Rutgers returns to the road for the third time in five games with a trip to No. 3 Ohio State on Oct. 1. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
