No. 24 Wrestling Competes Tough in Loss to No. 3 Michigan
Jan 22 | Wrestling
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 24 Rutgers wrestling (9-4, 1-3) lost to No. 3 Michigan (8-1, 3-1), 24-9, on Sunday afternoon in front of 4,560 fans at Jersey Mike's Arena. No. 11 Dean Peterson (125) and No. 17 Joseph Olivieri (141) picked up ranked wins, while Billy Janzer (197) added a decision to highlight action for the Scarlet Knights against the Wolverines in Piscataway.
RU wrestled tough against top-three Michigan, with six matches decided by two or less points while allowing bonus in just one bout in the 7-3 match split in favor of the Wolverines. Olivieri and Peterson remained perfect in Big Ten Conference action with identical 4-0 records in league competition.
"Not disappointed in the effort," said head coach Scott Goodale. "I knew there was going to be a lot of close matches today. It was a great crowd and I thought we were going to make it happen, but maybe they are just a little better in some spots. If you want to pick off the No. 3 team in the country, you have to win those matches, and we just did not do that today."

| How it Happened |
- Peterson opened against No. 23 Jack Medley - who came off a win against No. 5 Eric Barnett of Wisconsin last week - and landed a takedown with 18 seconds left in the third period for a 3-1 victory. The win was Peterson's second ranked win of the weekend after he defeated No. 24 Tristan Lujan on Friday in RU's dual win against No. 20 Michgian State.
- After a tough 2-0 loss from No. 17 Joe Heilmann (133) to No. 12 Dylan Ragusin, Olivieri followed against No. 23 Cole Mattin and used a late takedown in the second period for a 3-1 decision. The win gave Rutgers a 6-3 lead through three bouts.
- Loses at 149 and 157 pounds would give Michigan a 9-6 lead at intermission, while the Wolverines all but put the dual away with three consecutive wins out of the break.
- Janzer faced Brendin Yatooma and finished on a single leg to tie the match at 2-2 through two periods. Janzer then escaped in the third to hold on to the 3-2 decision, his first in Big Ten action this season.
