SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — The Rutgers women's basketball team (2-2, 0-0 B1G) dropped an 82-63 decision at Seton Hall (3-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) on Wednesday night.
Destiny Adams recorded a career-best 27 points in the outing while Kaylene Smikle followed with 13. Both recorded a team-high eight rebounds, helping the Scarlet Knights to win the battle off the boards, 34-33.
How it Happened
- Seton Hall scored the first points of the contest with two shots from the line, but Rutgers quickly evened the score with a steal and layup from Destiny Adams.
- The Pirates pulled ahead though, adding five more points to take the 7-2 edge at the seven-minute mark and eventually the 15-6 advantage at the 5:07 media timeout.
- Out of the break, Mya Petticord hit a three to close the gap to six points, but SHU quickly responded with four more made free throws.
- The two teams traded baskets to end the period with Seton Hall ahead by eight, 24-16.
- The Scarlet Knights got things going in the second quarter, starting off with five consecutive points to force a Pirates' timeout at 8:08. Cornwell capped off the stretch with a three-point play to put the contest within three points, 24-21.
- Out of the stop, SHU rebounded with a six-point run of their own to regain the 30-21 lead just over halfway through the quarter. Cornwell and Smikle put a stop to the scoring for Seton Hall with back-to-back layups.
- The Pirates ended the first half outscoring RU, 10-3, to take the 40-28 advantage into the locker room. Kassondra Brown hit her first three-pointer of the campaign for the lone points of the end of the second for RU.
- It was more of the same coming out of halftime, as SHU netted nine more points in the first two minutes of the third quarter to stay up, 49-30. However, Petticord and Adams had the answer this time, combining for six points to get on the board.
- The Pirates continued to pile on though, making five shots from the charity stripe and a layup to go up, 56-38 at the 4:37 media timeout.
- Out of the break, RU added four to chip away at the opposition's lead, 59-42. The two teams ended the third quarter with alternating trips up and down the floor, but SHU still emerged on top, 64-46.
- Adams kicked off scoring once again in the final ten minutes, but Seton Hall didn't stay quiet for long as the opponent added five more points to go up by 21 and force a Scarlet Knights' timeout with 8:20 to go.
- Adams came out of the stop strong once again, netting three points for RU. The two teams went back-and-fourth scoring, until just before the five-minute point, when Rutgers began a 7-4 stretch, highlighted by a three-point play by Adams.
- Despite the effort, the Pirates ultimately came out with the 82-63 victory.
Knights Notes
- Adams led the way for Rutgers with a game-high 27 points. The performance marks a season high and just the second 20+ point performance of her career. She also tied for a team best eight boards.
