NEW YORK – Rutgers track and field opened the 2023-24 indoor season Friday, hosting the Second Annual Rutgers Holiday Classic at the famed Armory Track and Field Center in New York.
Chloe Timberg set a school record in the pole vault, breaking the mark she previously established a year ago at the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
Â
"It was a great December meet. A good portion of the team either recorded a PR or had their best opener," said
Bobby Farrell, director of track and field & cross country. "This is a meet we train through. We see it more as a time trial or testing day. It's a great training day to go out there and compete. The coaches and student-athletes learned a lot. Now it's time to go back to work the next six weeks in preparation for our first January meet."
Â
Timberg won the pole vault, clearing a school record height of 4.47m (14' 8"). Her win was one of 12 first-place finishes on the afternoon for the Scarlet Knights.
Alicia Campbell won the shot put with a throw of 15.77m (51' 9"), while graduate student
Claudine Smith was victorious in the triple jump with a mark of 12.10m (39' 8.5").
Sydney Hawkins posted a win on the track for the women's team as she finished first in the 60-meter with a time of 7.48.
Shelby Whetstone won 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:02.61.
Â
On the men's side,
James Bivins and
Bryce Tucker each earned a pair of wins. Bivins placed first in the 60-meter with a time of 6.90 and won the long jump with a distance of 7.18m (23' 6.75"). Tucker was victorious in the 600-meter in a time of 1:19.52 and finished first in the 800-meter in 2:00.02.
Â
Liam Tilton finished first in the 5,000-meter, clocking a time of 14:45.83. Rutgers also claimed a victory in the men's pole vault as freshman
Brian O'Sullivan posted a height of 5.23m (17' 1.75").
Â
Rutgers will break until the New Year and then return to action Saturday, Jan. 13 for the Penn 10-Team Select at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York.
