Softball Out To 5-0 Start Behind 2-0 Victory at Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Rutgers softball team swept the NorCal Classic on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Sacramento State to improve to 5-0 on the year.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Raimy Gamsby earned her first collegiate victory tossing 5.1 innings with five strikeouts. The rookie threw 58 strikes on 89 pitches. Jaden Vickers picked up the save.
  • Rutgers put runs up on the scoreboard off a Katie Wingert sacrifice fly and a Morgan Smith suicide squeeze.
THE RUNDOWN
  • The Scarlet Knights were the first team to put runners into scoring position on the day. In the top of the fourth Katie Wingert led off with a double popping out of the glove of the Sacramento State left fielder. Taylor Lane entered to pinch run and made her way to third on a sac bunt by Ryann Orange. Megan Herka came to the plate for a walk and Kiersten Withstandley entered the game at first to pinch run and stole second. With two outs, Lane attempted to catch the Hornets off guard but was caught trying to steal home to retire the side.
  • Rutgers broke the scoreless stalemate in the sixth. Kyleigh Sand singled to right and advanced to second when the ball tipped off the glove of the relay throw. A sac bunt from Payton Lincavage put Sand on the corner setting up Katie Wingert to bring the junior Scarlet Knight home on sac fly to right.
  • The Hornets threatened in the bottom of the sixth with a runner on second and two outs. Sacramento State's Carley Morfey took a 3-2 pitch to the left field foul pole that was caught by Kobie Hura to keep the Scarlet Knights in front.
  • Morgan Smith gave RU an insurance run in the seventh on a suicide squeeze scoring Kiersten Withstandley.
