Tennis Battles to Earn Victory Against UMass

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. — The Rutgers women's tennis team (8-1) defeated UMass (3-2), 5-2, in the team's final nonconference home match of the spring on Saturday evening at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. The Scarlet Knights battled to earn the win in an intense, four-hour match.
In the contest, sophomore Jackeline Lopez and freshman Arina Valitova gave the Scarlet Knights an early 1-0 after securing the doubles point.
Rutgers then earned two hard-fought singles victories from junior Tara Chilton and Lopez to clinch the win.
Doubles
Lopez and Valitova clinched the doubles point for Rutgers after the Minutewomen forfeited the at the No. 3 spot. The pair recorded a 6-4 victory at the No. 2 spot over their opponents.
Rutgers has been strong in doubles this season, winning the point in all eight of their victories.
Singles
In singles play, Chilton provided the match clinching win for RU. The junior recorded a 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 victory at the No. 2 spot. UMass forfeited at the No. 5 and 6 singles spots.
Lopez defeated the opposition, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, at the first spot for her sixth singles victory of the season.

Rutgers is set to begin a five-match road stint, starting at Delaware on Friday, February 24 at 12 p.m. ET. The Scarlet Knights then begin Big Ten play starting on March 10 and 11 at Indiana and Purdue.
