Softball Closes Out Low Country Classic With 7-2 Win Over Syracuse

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Rutgers softball closed out the Low Country Classic at Patriots Point on Sunday with a 7-2 victory over Syracuse.

The win gave RU a 4-1 record at the Low Country Classic and improves the Scarlet Knights to 12-3 on the year.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Raimy Gamsby improved to 4-1 inside the circle throwing six innings with no earned runs. She only allowed two hits thru her first five innings.
  • Kyleigh Sand was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Morgan Smith was 2-for-2 with a run and RBI.
  • Ryann Orange, with her third home run of the weekend, along with Taylor Fawcett each collected a pair of RBIs.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Rutgers took the lead in the top of the first. A single to center, stolen base, a wild pitch and a line-drive sacrifice fly took leadoff Kyleigh Sand around the bases for the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Scarlet Knights added to the lead with a two-run home run from Ryann Orange, her third of the tournament and fourth of the season in the third.
  • RU tacked four more on in the fifth. Taylor Fawcett entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs for a base hit down the left field line capturing two RBIs. The bases were also loaded two batters later for
  • Megan Herka used a sacrifice fly to center to extend the Scarlet Knights' lead to 6-0. Sand wrapped up the inning scoring on a fielder's choice to score Fawcett for the game's seventh run.   
  • The Orange managed their runs in the bottom of the sixth with two outs. A bobble in the outfield added Syracuse's first run and a Yamila Evans single to right dropped RU's lead to 7-2. Syracuse loaded the bases, but the Scarlet Knights were able to get out of the inning without further scoring.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • Kyleigh Sand moved into a tie for seventh in stolen bases at Rutgers with 40 career stolen bags. She needs three more to tie Amanda Shaw (2006-09) for sixth and five more to tie Quyen Tran (1997-00) for fifth on the list.
  • Additionally, Sand's on-base streak extended to 51 straight games.
  • On the weekend, Ryann Orange hit .563 (9-of-16) including three home runs, two doubles and a triple. The rookie Scarlet Knight logged seven runs, seven RBIs and a 1.375 slugging percentage.
  • Raimy Gamsby led the pitching corps this weekend going 2-1 allowing no earned runs and 10 hits over 16.0 innings inside the circle.

The Rutgers softball team returns to action next weekend in South Carolina. The Scarlet Knights will take on Robert Morris, Syracuse and host College of Charleston.
