PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers softball team made it a 6-0 weekend on Sunday with a pair of wins on the final day of the Rutgers Softball Tournament.
The Scarlet Knights improved to 23-10 overall with a 9-1 victory over UMass-Lowell in six innings and an 8-5 win against Holy Cross.
Rutgers 9, UMass-Lowell 1 - 6 innings
- Rutgers picked up its third-straight run-rule victory in six innings.
- Katie Wingert continued to climb up the all-time home run list with a two-run home run in the first inning. The Scarlet Knight catcher also came up with the game-ending RBI in the sixth.
- Taylor Lane also contributed a three-run home run in the victory.
- Kyleigh Sand was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and a run scored and Kobie Hura was 2-for-2 with an RBI double and a run scored.
- Raimy Gamsby went the distance inside the circle allowing only one run and one hit while retiring five River Hawks on strikes.
- Katie Wingert gave the Scarlet Knights a lead they would not relinquish in the bottom of the first as she smacked the ball over the wall on her second pitch of the day in left for a 2-0 lead.
- Morgan Smith, who entered the weekend leading the Big Ten and 17th in the country in sacrifice flies, put RU up 3-0 after a fly out to centerfield allowed Kyleigh Sand to score.
- UMass-Lowell collected the lone run of the contest in the top of the fourth as Cayla Tulley opened the inning with a homer down the left-field line.
- Rutgers, however, got two runs in their return to the plate. The Scarlet Knights went up 5-1 off a Kobie Hura double and Leilani Chavez single to left center.
- Taylor Lane extended RU's advantage in the fifth as she hit the left field foul pole for a three-run home run and an 8-1 lead.
- Wingert took the Scarlet Knights off the field in the sixth as her fielder's choice scored Payton Lincavage. Lincavage reached base after being hit at the plate and advanced to third on a single by Smith before coming home to give Rutgers the 9-1 win.
- Katie Wingert's home run was her third of the season and moved her into a tie for fourth all-time with 26 career dingers. She needs four more to tie Rebecca Hall (2015-18) for third all-time "On The Banks".
- Taylor Lane collected her second career home run. She also set a new career high with three RBIs besting her previous mark of two collected on three occasions, most recently against Illinois last season on April 15.
- Kyleigh Sand's stolen base upped her season total to 25 and moved her into fifth on the single-season leaders list. She needs five more to move into a three-way tie for third along with Carla Camino (1992) and Brittney Neer (2001).
- Wingert and Lane gave RU multiple home runs in a contest for the sixth time this season and the second time this weekend. RU also had a pair of home runs by Taylor Fawcett and Megan Herka in RU's 9-1 win over Iona on Saturday.
Rutgers 8, Holy Cross 5
- Ryann Orange went 3-for-3 with a double and run scored. The rookie Scarlet Knight also got the start in game two throwing three innings allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out three Crusaders.
- Kobie Hura logged a two-run home run, while Katie Wingert added a pair of RBIs.
- Jaden Vickers got the win tossing the game's final four innings to improve to 6-4. She allowed three hits and two runs while fanning five.
- Morgan Smith added another sacrifice fly on the day to give Rutgers another first-inning lead scoring leadoff Kyleigh Sand.
- Holy Cross tied up the game in the top of the second as Ali Sniegocki stole home. The Scarlet Knights, however, took back the lead in the bottom of the inning off another sacrifice fly. This time it was off the bat of Maddie Lawson, which allowed Taylor Fawcett the score.
- The Crusaders were back in front the following inning. Anna Brait homered to right center for two runs putting her squad up 3-2.
- The Scarlet Knights posted three runs in the third and another trio in the fourth to stay ahead for good. The third inning saw Kobie Hura lead off and launch her first pitch to center field while a two-RBI double from Katie Wingert put RU up 5-3. The fourth inning saw the Scarlet Knights take advantage of wild pitches. Lawson, Hura and Orange all scored on errant pitches extending the RU lead to 8-3.
- Holy Cross cut its deficit in the seventh by a pair of runs with a Bailey Bates home run to left.
- Ryann Orange went 3-for-3 for the fourth time this season and the second time this weekend. She was also 3-for-3 with four RBIs in Saturday's 9-1 win over Saint Peter's and also had 3-for-3 efforts against Robert Morris in a 10-1 win on Feb. 24 and Charleston in a 9-4 victory on Feb. 25.
- Kobie Hura posted her second home run of the 2023 season and fourth of her career.
- Morgan Smith upped her sacrifice fly total to five.
- Ryann Orange finished her first Scarlet Knight home weekend hitting .545 (6-for-11) with two runs and four RBIs. The rookie logged two doubles as one of six Scarlet Knights with two or more doubles on the weekend.
- Katie Wingert totaled four while Kyleigh Sand notched three of RU's 16 doubles over the course of the six games. Wingert currently leads Rutgers with 10 doubles on the season and needs three more to crack the single-season list.
- Also hitting over .500 was Payton Lincavage who went 7-for-13 to bat .538. She was responsible for 11 of RU's 49 runs.
- Inside the circle, both Jaden Vickers and Raimy Gamsby went 2-0. Gamsby led the pitching corps with 15 innings of work with a weekend ERA of 1.87 and 10 strikeouts in three appearances. Vickers threw nine innings with a 1.56 ERA in her two appearances and 10 strikeouts as well.
The Rutgers softball team begins Big Ten action on the road. The Scarlet Knights travel to Illinois, the site of this year's Big Ten Tournament in May, for three-game series with the Fighting Illini beginning on Friday, March 24.
