No. 25 Women's Lacrosse Loses Tough 12-11 Contest at RV Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE – No. 25 Rutgers women's lacrosse (4-6, 0-4) lost a heartbreaker to RV Johns Hopkins (5-6, 2-1), 12-11 on Saturday in Baltimore. With the Scarlet Knights leading the majority of the game and up 11-6 to begin the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays rallied with a 6-0 scoring run in the final 15 minutes, including the eventual game-winner from Georgie Gorelick with just under five minutes to play, to earn the Big Ten Conference win at Homewood Field.

Senior Cassidy Spilis netted four goals, graduate student Marin Hartshorn added four points on two goals and two assists, while senior Janey Galski added her first hat trick of the season in the loss. Senior Meghan Ball - who was just added to the Midseason All-America list by ILWomen - added four draw controls and three caused turnovers, and classmate Ashley Campo also caused three turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Sophia Cardello registered nine saves in the loss.

It was all Rutgers in the first half, as the Scarlet Knights opened the game with a 3-0 scoring run. Hartshorn found Galski in the first minute, while back-to-back goals from Spilis gave RU a 3-0 lead at the 8:13 mark in the first quarter. A goal from junior Ashley Moynahan stopped a 2-0 scoring run from Johns Hopkins, as Rutgers ended the first 15 minutes of play with a 4-2 lead.

The Scarlet Knights continued to dictate the pace on offense before halftime, outscoring JHU 6-2 in the second quarter. Galski netted two goals in the period, while scores from Spilis and freshman Lily Dixon made it 8-3 RU with 2:25 left before the break. Hartshorn then netted two goals in the closing minutes, including a finish off the pass from senior Jenna Byrne with just five seconds left to send Rutgers into the locker room with a 10-4 lead.

Offense would be at a premium in the third quarter, with Johns Hopkins outscoring the Scarlet Knights just 2-1 in the next 15 minutes of action. Spilis' fourth of the day with 3:57 left in the stanza made it 11-5. The Blue Jays would counter to make it a five-goal game heading into the fourth.

JHU shutout Rutgers in the final 15 minutes of play to help complete its comeback. Baily Cheetham converted a free-position goal to tie the game at 11-11, while Gorelick finished an unassisted goal to give Johns Hopkins its first lead of the day at 12-11 with just over five minutes to play. RU was unable to get another shot on goal down the stretch as the Blue Jays held on for the win.
