Softball Edged In Extra Innings

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – After a blustery morning, the sun came out for game time on Saturday for the second game of the weekend series between Rutgers and Purdue.

The Scarlet Knights overcame a 3-1 deficit putting up two runs in the sixth inning to help force extra innings. However, the Boilermakers produced three runs in the eighth leading to the 6-3 win over Rutgers.

RU fell to 26-12 on the year and 3-2 in Big Ten play. Purdue upped its mark to 17-18 overall and 2-5 in league action.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Katie Wingert was 3-for-4 with a run scored off a Calista Collins base hit in the second.
  • Payton Lincavage and Morgan Smith both captured RBI doubles in the sixth knotting the score at 3-3.
  • Morgan Smith was the Saturday starter going four innings allowing four hits and a pair of earned runs along with four strikeouts. Ashley Hitchcock was the pitcher of record in her first loss as she fell to 7-1 on the year. She fanned three in her 3.2 innings of work.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Purdue went out to a 3-1 lead with runs scored in each of the first three innings. The first inning saw Olivia McFadden collect an RBI double, while the second had Hailey Hayes make her way around the bases and score on a passed ball and the third saw a solo home run from Tyrina Jones.
  • Rutgers got onto the scoreboard in the second inning. Katie Wingert led off with a single to left and advanced on a misplay in the outfield. Calista Collins delivered a single to left for Wingert to take two bases.
  • Payton Lincavage and Morgan Smith used back-to-back RBI doubles into left field to knot the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth. The Scarlet Knights had a chance at the go-ahead run on a Taylor Fawcett chopper to third. The Boilermakers, however, made the play at the plate stopping Smith from putting the RU ahead.
  • Rutgers managed to get pinch runner Taylor Lane to third with two outs in the seventh, however, the Scarlet Knight was left aboard as the teams headed to extras.
  • Purdue scored three runs on four hits to take the lead. Alex Echazaretta homered to left and Rita Nuss added another run on a double to left center.

Rutgers and Purdue close out the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Rutgers Softball Complex. Admission is free.
