UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Rutgers softball dropped both games on Friday night's doubleheader at Beard Field with Penn State.Â
The Nittany Lions took game one 1-0 scoring the contest's lone run in the sixth inning and captured a 3-0 victory in game two behind a three-run home run in the second inning.
Rutgers fell to 30-16 overall and 7-6 in Big Ten play, while Penn State upped its record to 22-13 overall and 4-9 in conference action.
Penn State 1, Rutgers 0
- The Scarlet Knights kept Penn State from scoring with runners in scoring position in the second inning with one out and a one-out bases-loaded jam in the fifth.Â
- With two outs and two on, Maddie Lawson made a diving stop to prevent Emily Maddock's hit from going into the outfield, but Lilia Crouthamel was able to round third and score. The Nittany Lions followed loading the bases for a second time but the side was retired before adding another run.Â
- Katie Wingert moved into a tie for sixth on the single-season walks leaders list with 29 bases on balls.Â
Penn State 3, Rutgers 0
- Rutgers had runners on first and second in the second and fourth innings, but the hosts would not allow the Scarlet Knights to advance any further. Megan Herka posted her first double of the season down the right-field line and Taylor Fawcett was hit by a pitch in the second, while the fourth saw Maddie Lawson with a single to left and Herka walk.
- Penn State used a three-run home run in the second from the bat of Maddie Gordon for the game's lone runs.
- Lauren Punk notched Rutgers' 17th double play the season in the fifth catching a line drive and catching the Nittany Lions off the bag at first.
Rutgers and Penn State will wrap up the season on Sunday at noon.
