PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers softball's comeback against Indiana in Sunday's finale fell just short as the Hoosiers took the finale game 5-4.
Indiana was leading 3-0 when Rutgers produced four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead. The Hoosiers, however, tied the ballgame with a run in the fifth and put the go-ahead run on the scoreboard in the sixth.
The loss dropped the Scarlet Knights to 30-20 overall and 7-10 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers upped their overall record to 35-15 and 12-5 in league play.
Indiana 5, Rutgers 4
- Indiana put up two runs in its first at-bat. Taryn Kern homered down the left field line and Brianna Copeland collected an RBI double to center for the 2-0 lead.
- RU had a chance at a run in the second. Kayla Bock singled to center, but the visitors were able to catch Katie Wingert at home trying to take the extra base.
- The Hoosiers made it 3-0 in the third. With the bases loaded, Sarah Stone used a sacrifice fly to center to score Cora Bassett.
- Rutgers, however, scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. The Scarlet Knights loaded the bases on a Calista Collins walk, Ryann Orange single to left and Kyleigh Sand bunt. While a Payton Lincavage fielder's choice stopped a run from going on the board, Morgan Sand was hit by a pitch at the next at-bat to score Sand for RU's first run. Katie Wingert then delivered two RBIs with a single to right center to tie the ball game at 3-3 while Maddie Lawson followed by adding a sacrifice fly to left for the 4-3 edge.
- Indiana loaded the bases again in the fifth with Bassett scoring the tying run on a Stone groundout. Rutgers got out of the top half without further damage as the side was retired with a flyout to left by Avery Parker and Kern leaving third base early.
- Another bases loaded situation allowed the Hoosiers to score the game-winning run as Aaliyah Andrews scored after Kern was hit by a pitch.
The Rutgers softball departs for its final Big Ten regular season road trip. The Scarlet Knights meet up with Iowa Hawkeyes for a three-game series April 28-30.
