2023 Football Spring Awards

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Head coach Greg Schiano announced the spring award winners for the Scarlet Knights Saturday at the Scarlet-White Game, presented by PNC.

Mark Mills Second Effort Award – WR Christian Dremel
Named in memory of former Scarlet Knight running back Mark Mills and awarded to the offensive player who through determination, dedication and hard work has shown the most improvement during the offseason and spring practices.

Joining the program as a walk-on, Dremel has played in 32 games the past four seasons for the Scarlet Knights. The Caldwell, New Jersey, native is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Douglas A. Smith Second Effort Award – DL Mayan Ahanotu
Named in memory of former Scarlet Knight defensive tackle Doug Smith and awarded to the defensive player who through determination, dedication and hard work has shown the most improvement during the offseason and spring practices.

Having played the last 34 games consecutively for the Scarlet Knights, Ahanotu has totaled 39 tackles with 8.5 for loss the past three seasons for the Scarlet Knights in the middle of the defensive line. The Tampa, Florida, native was voted a team captain in 2022, is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and earned a spot on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team®. An active member of Chop4Change, he claimed a spot on the Wuerffel Trophy watch list, which recognizes college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society and inspire greater service in the world as the sport's premier award for community service.

Frank R. Burns Award – OL Reggie Sutton
Named after former Scarlet Knight All-America quarterback Frank Burns and awarded to the player who demonstrates extraordinary mental and physical toughness during the spring.

Sutton returned to the practice field this spring for the first time since suffering an injury in September 2021. The Baltimore native enters 2023 with 13 starts in 22 career games played for the Scarlet Knights. The four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection was named honorable mention All-Big Ten in the coaches' vote following the 2020 season.
