Softball Overcomes Five-Run Deficit For First 30-Win Season Since 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Down by five runs in the second inning to Ohio State, Rutgers softball came back for a 6-5 victory for its first 30-win season since 2013 on Friday evening at Buckeye Field.

Payton Lincavage used a three-run home run in the fourth to tie the game and delivered a solo shot in the sixth to give Rutgers the lead.

The win put Rutgers at 30-12 overall and 7-2 in Big Ten play. Ohio State dropped to 21-13 overall and 2-5 in league action.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Payton Lincavage was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Maddie Lawson was 2-for-3 with a run.
  • Kobie Hura and Katie Wingert each collected RBIs in getting the Scarlet Knights on the scoreboard in the third.
  • Ryann Orange went to 2-0 tossing 3.2 innings allowing only one hit and four walks.
  • Jaden Vickers picked up her second save of the season hurling the final two innings.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Ohio State went in front with its second batter of the evening. Melina Wilkison went deep to left field for a solo shot and the 1-0 lead for the hosts.
  • Another home run in the second gave the Buckeyes a 5-0 lead. Kaitlyn Farley belted a right-field grand slam after Ohio State reached base on a pair of singles and a walk.
  • Rutgers got onto the scoreboard in the third. The bases were loaded with two outs for Katie Wingert to walk and Kobie Hura to get hit by a pitch for a pair of runs.
  • The Scarlet Knights tied the game in the top of the fourth. Payton Lincavage sent the ball to left center, hit the top of the wall and got the bounce over for a three-run home run and a 5-5 ballgame.
    Lincavage went long again in the sixth to give Rutgers the lead. The senior third baseman's ball went out in left to give the Scarlet Knights the 6-5 edge marking six consecutive runs by RU after trailing 5-0 at the end of two.
  • The Buckeyes had one on board in the bottom of the seventh with one out. Sam Hackenbracht hit a double to left center giving Kami Krotokrax the opportunity to score the tying run. Originally called safe, the throw from Morgan Smith to Kyleigh Sand to Katie Wingert for the tag at the plate called the Buckeye out on video review.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • Friday's win gave Rutgers its first 30 win season since 2013 when the Scarlet Knights went 30-26 in its final season in the Big East.  It marks the program's fourth 30-win season.
