All three boats finished second in C finals on Sunday
The Varsity 4 set the tone for a great day of Rutgers racing, rowing bow to bow with No. 10 Syracuse down the 2,000-meter course. Rutgers was within a second with 500 meters to go before the Orange pulled away with a 3.4-second margin at the finish line. The boat earned a 14th place national finish for the result.
The 2nd Varsity 8 followed suit with another thrilling race, battling No. 14 Duke for the C final win. The Scarlet Knights never lost contact with the Blue Devils, who maintained less than a second lead through 1,500 meters. Duke edged Rutgers by 2.5 seconds at the line, clocking a 14th place national finish for the boat from Rutgers.
The Varsity 8 concluded the 2023 rowing season with a Big Ten battle for the C final victory. The Scarlet Knights and No. 12 Ohio State reached 500 meters with nearly identical times and didn't separate by much more for the remainder of the race. The Buckeyes led by less than a second at 1,000 meter, 1.3 seconds at 1,500, and eked out a 1.5-second win at the finish. Rutgers finished with open water ahead of No. 14 Duke, No. No. 16 Indiana, and No. 18 USC for a 14th place national finish.
The Scarlet Knights entered the national regatta with just nine returners from last season's NCAA boats, with the strong depth of NCAA newcomers keeping the trend of Rutgers outracing its seeding heading into the NCAA Championships. All three 14th-place boats finished ahead of their seed (V8 - 17th, 2V8 - 15th, V4 - 16th).
