PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Wrapping up a three-game homestand to start the season, Rutgers football celebrates the Scarlet Out/R Community Game on Sept. 16 versus Virginia Tech at SHI Stadium. The game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network and is presented by
PNC.
The
Scarlet Out/R Community Game is the fourth announced theme of the 2023 season, which includes seven home games. The
Back to the Birthplace Game (Sunday, Sept. 3),
Blackout (Sept. 9) and
Homecoming & Family Weekend (Oct. 14) were previously revealed, with three more promotional releases to come.
Fans are encouraged to wear red and arrive early to experience the sights and sounds of Rutgers game day, which includes a pregame flyover by the New Jersey State Police, the national anthem performed by a member of Special Olympics New Jersey, celebrity guests and an inspiring halftime show featuring groups from throughout the Rutgers community. Stay tuned for the light show as darkness falls in the second half of the game.
The Rutgers Boardwalk will host its first-ever "Food Truck Festival," featuring more than 40 of New Jersey's best food trucks. Stroll down The Rutgers Boardwalk and sample the tastes of New Jersey. Also experience free rides, games, interactive experiences, prizes and live entertainment, while also visiting with community groups. Local police and fire departments will station their vehicles for fans of all ages to check out and take photos.
Get to The Rutgers Boardwalk for the pregame parade and pep rally (1 p.m.) featuring the Marching Scarlet Knights, Spirit Team, Sir Henry, the Scarlet Knight horse "Excalibur" with the Knight and the football team arrival. The Rutgers Boardwalk and "Food Truck Festival" will open at 11:30 a.m. before the Scarlet Out/R Community Game.
Giveaways for the day include "Beat Virginia Tech" buttons, posters, shakers, Block R t-shirts and the third edition of the comic series, all which can be picked up at the pregame pep rally at The Rutgers Boardwalk. Also, multiple televisions will be given away in the stadium throughout the game.
As part of celebrating the community, members of the Embrace Kids Foundation, Dance Marathon, Saturdays In Motion, Elijah's Promise, Special Olympics New Jersey and more will join in the pregame parade down The Rutgers Boardwalk. That leads to the Scarlet Walk. Special Olympics New Jersey will later join as honorary captains for the coin toss at midfield.
Marching bands of all levels and sizes are invited to the Scarlet Out/R Community Game. All participating bands will get to experience a game day as members of The Marching Scarlet Knights – from pregame practice, to leading the pep rally, to an on-field halftime performance. In a series that began in 1920, this will mark the first meeting with the Hokies since the 2011 Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando. The last matchup in the regular season took place in 2003, as one of the most memorable wins in program history was a 50-49 victory over Virginia Tech on Halloween 1992.
Season tickets are on sale for the home slate this fall, which features four games at SHI Stadium in September. Season ticket holders receive a one-time, 15 percent discount to the Rutgers Team Shop online, while gaining the same discount in-stadium multiples times throughout the year.
