PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers football RB
Kyle Monangai is one of six running backs to be recognized nationally by the
Doak Walker Award for their performance in week three. The Doak Walker Award is annually bestowed to the top running back in the nation.
"(Kyle's) had so far a great start to the season, and really represents I think what our football team is about," head coach
Greg Schiano said. "Works extremely hard. Lives in the moment, chops the moment and it's paying off for him. Excited for him and for our team."
The Big Ten's leading rusher at 357 yards overall, Monangai ran for 143 yards (8.9 yards per carry) and three touchdowns in the Scarlet Knights' recent 35-16 win over Virginia Tech. It was the second-straight week in triple figures for the Roseland, New Jersey, native, the first Rutgers player to achieve the feat since 2016 (Robert Martin).
Monangai also leads the league with 126.7 all-purpose yards per game heading into week four. His five touchdowns are second most in the conference, as he has scored in each of the three games so far. The 357 rushing yards are the most for a Scarlet Knight through game three since Paul James (493) in 2013 and the last with rushing touchdowns in each of the first three games was Ray Rice (eight total) in 2007.
This is the second weekly honor for Monangai, who claimed
Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
The Scarlet Knights (3-0, 1-0) hit the road for the first time this season with a trip to face No. 2 Michigan (3-0, 0-0) Saturday at Michigan Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon on Big Ten Network and the RWJBarnabas Health Rutgers Sports Network.
