Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Can't Get Past No. 17/16 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Rutgers women's basketball team (6-12, 0-5 B1G) couldn't get past No. 17/16 Ohio State (12-3, 3-1 B1G) on the road, falling 90-55. 

Destiny Adams paced Rutgers with 18 points in addition to seven rebounds. Mya Petticord also netted double figure points, ending the night with 10.  

Chyna Cornwell grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the game, as the teams tied 35-35 off the glass.  

How it Happened 

  • Adams got the first score of the night but Ohio State quickly followed up with a 10-point run to take the early 10-2 lead and force a Rutgers timeout.  
  • At the halfway point of the opening period, the Buckeyes continued to play strong on both ends of the floor, keeping the 17-6 edge. Adams hit a big three-point play to put the score within eight points with a little over four minutes to go.  

  • The Scarlet Knights continued to create opportunities on offense, but OSU continued to pile on, stretching its lead to double digits, 27-13, at the end of the first. 
  • Adams once again started RU off on the scoreboard, netting a second chance layup to begin the second period. However, Ohio State did not let up, coming back with 10 unanswered points to extend its lead.  
  • Chyna Cornwell put an end to the run with a layup off a pass from Adams, but the Buckeyes continued to go to the rim, netting a fast break layup to go up, 39-17, and force another Scarlet Knights' timeout with 5:11 to go in the opening half.  
  • Mya Petticord ended a drought from the field for Rutgers with a pull up jumper, but OSU was able to keep building on its lead, ending the half with a 51-22 advantage.  
  • RU recorded three consecutive buckets to start the second half to help shrink the gap. The squad stepped up on defense as well, not allowing a field goal from Ohio State until the 6:05 mark. 
  • Two free throws from Jillian Huerter put an end to another stretch for the Buckeyes at the period's halfway point, but the opponent remained ahead, 65-30 at the 4:04 media timeout.  
  • The Scarlet Knights battled in the final minutes of the third, as Cornwell gave her team an offense spark. The team score on three possessions in a row, capped off by a three from Lisa Thompson.  
  • The final 10 minutes started off slow, but OSU made three shots in a row of its own as RU called its third timeout of the night with 5:58 to play, 80-44.  
  • Just before the 4:54 media timeout, Adams continued to add to her point total and help her team, cashing in on another three-point play to cut the difference.  
  • Rutgers continued to fight down the stretch but Ohio State ultimately came out on top,  

Knights Notes 

  • Adams ended the night with 18 points, she has reached double-digit points in the pat three games. She has reached 10+ points 13 times this season and led the team in scoring on four occasions.  
  • Adams also went 6-for-6 from the free throw line, here third perfect performance in the last four contests. 
  • Since returning to the court after a brief hiatus, Petticord has not scored less than 10 points. She has reached double figure scoring in four consecutive games and five this season.  
  • With 13 rebounds, Cornwell has recorded double figures off the glass in 13 outings this campaign and 20 during her career. She leads the team averaging 8.6 rebounds per game. 
  • Bates secured three blocks against he Buckeyes, her third game with 3+ denials this slate. She paces RU overall with 28 stops.  
  • Rutgers bested Ohio State in second chance points, 17-16. 

Next Up 

Rutgers will return to Jersey Mike's Arena to host Penn State on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. The contest will be available to stream on B1G+.
