Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Defeated by No. 4/3 Iowa

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — The Rutgers women's basketball team (6-11, 0-4 B1G) fell to No. 4/3 Iowa (15-1, 4-0 B1G), 103-69, on Friday night in Jersey Mike's Arena. Kassondra Brown led the Scarlet Knight's effort in the loss, notching her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  

Alongside Brown's dozen, Chyna Cornwell and Mya Petticord also added 12 points apiece for Rutgers. The sophomore transfer, Petticord, also dished out a team-high four assists. 

Lisa Thompson recorded 11 points in the game, marking her third-straight performance in double figures.  

Destiny Adams rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Scarlet Knights with 11 points of her own, while also grabbing six boards and two blocks.  

The Scarlet Knights played in front of a sold out Jersey Mike's Arena. The advance sellout marked the first under head coach Coquese Washington and the first since 2006. 
 



RU also welcomed back several alumni in addition to former Rutgers head coaches Theresa Grentz and C. Vivian Stringer. Stringer was honored pregame as she was previosuly named a 2024 Naismith Outstanding Contributors to Basketball Award Winner. 
 

How it Happened 

  • The Hawkeyes opened the game's scoring with a layup 20 seconds into the contest. Thompson responded for the Scarlet Knights with a three-pointer to put RU out in front, 3-2.  
  • After Iowa locked the contest at three, Thompson responded with another two points for the Scarlet Knights. The Hawkeyes came back with a 7-0 run, forcing a Rutgers timeout. 
  • Out of the break, Brown recorded her first points of the game with two makes at the charity stripe to end the opposition's run. The teams went on to trade back-and-forth baskets, with the Hawkeyes holding a 20-14 edge with two minutes remaining in the opening quarter.  
  • Petticord recorded two free throws at the end of the frame, as Iowa took a 25-19 edge into the second quarter.  
  • After Iowa opened the second quarter with five-straight points, Jillian Huerter intercepted a Hawkeye pass, leading to her own three-pointer, putting Rutgers back within eight. 
 
  • Heading into a 4:49 media break, the Scarlet Knights faced a 15-point deficit. 
  • Cornwell recorded a layup out of the timeout to end a 6-0 Iowa run, but the Hawkeyes continued to respond, pushing their advantage to 20 with two minutes to play in the half.  
  • Huerter added a jumper with 49 seconds to go, but the Scarlet Knights remained down, 55-30, heading to the locker room. 
  • Adams and Brown recorded four points apiece to open the second half, but the Haweyekes still held a 22-point edge heading into a 4:47 media timeout.  
  • Out of the break, Adams muscled in an and-one before Iowa used a 8-0 run to take a 35 point lead with 90 seconds left in the third.  
  • Thompson tacked on a field goal, but the Scarlet Knights remained down, 81-46, heading into the final 10 minutes of play.  
  • Antonia Bates recorded her first basket of the night with a layup to open the fourth quarter. The Scarlet Knights kept pushing, as at the 6:41 mark, Brown recorded a layup, which kicked off a 9-0 run for Rutgers.  
  • Iowa held a 95-61 lead heading into the final media break of the night.  
  • Petticord recorded a three-pointer for Rutgers as the clock winded down, but the Scarlet Knights ultimately fell, 103-69 
 

Knights Notes 

  • Brown's 12 point and 11 rebound performance marks her first double-double of the season. The graduate student now scored 10+ points in six of RU's last seven contests and has reached double figures in seven total contests this campaign.  
  • Thompson's 11 points marks her third-straight contest scoring in double figures. The freshman now has six double-digit scoring performers on the season.  
  • Petticord led the squad with four assists, marking the fourth time she has paced the team in the statistic this season.  
  • Brown (5-of-5) and Petticord (4-of-4) both had perfect nights at the free throw line. 
  • Adam's has now reached double figures in 12 outings this season after scoring 11 points against the Hawkeyes. 
  • Huerter matched a career-high two blocks that she set earlier this season against Lafayette (Dec. 1). 
  • RU outscored Iowa, 23-22, in the final quarter of the game.

Next Up 

The Scarlet Knights are set to face No. 20/13 Ohio State in Columbus on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. The contest will also be televised nationally on the Big Ten Network.   

Following the road trip, Rutgers will return to Jersey Mike's Arena to host Penn State on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m.
