PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's basketball head coach Coquese Washington announced the addition of walk-on Deja Young to the 2024-25 roster on Wednesday afternoon. Â
"We are super excited to round out our roster with the addition of Deja Young," Washington said. "In the short time that Deja has been with us, she has leaned into the values that make our team click. She is a hard worker, an excellent thinker, and, most importantly, a great teammate."Â
Prior to the junior arriving "On The Banks" she served as a walk-on for the Hampton women's basketball team from the fall of 2022 to the spring of 2023. During the campaign she helped the Pirates to a total of 12 wins including nine in conference play. Â
The New Jersey native attended Teaneck high school from 2018-2022 and led the women's basketball team to unprecedented success. Â
Young guided her team in the first round of the 2021-22 NJSIAA Tournament with a season-high 26 points, five assists and five takeaways. In addition, she also aided her squad in reaching the North Jersey Section 1, Group 3 Quarterfinals. Â
Young ended her senior season averaging 13.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game. Â
Off the court, Young excelled in the classroom as a member of the National Honors Society and the Principal's Honor Roll. Â
