Full Team Effort Leads Women's Basketball over Caldwell in Exhibition

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — The Rutgers women's basketball team (0-0) defeated Caldwell (0-0) in an open exhibition on Sunday, 101-48.  

Destiny Adams led the way with 24 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Kiyomi McMiller (21), Zachara Perkins (17) and JoJo Lacey (13) also reached double figures.  

In addition, Janae Walker ranked second on the floor with 11 rebounds while Perkins and Chyna Cornwell brought in nine apiece.  

The Scarlet Knights got out to a hot start and didn't let up to secure the 53-point win.  

How it Happened 

  • RU got out to a quick 7-0 lead thanks to consecutive layups and a three-pointer from JoJo Lacey
  • Zachara Perkins contributed to the lead as Caldwell added its first five points of the contest to make the score 9-5 with just under six minutes to play.  
  • Antonia Bates added four points, along with a three from Mya Petticord to take an 11-point edge at the media timeout. At the break, the RU defense held the Cougars scoreless. For 3:11 and 0-of-5 from the field.  
  • Perkins and Destiny Adams combined for six points to end the opening 10 minutes up, 22-12.  
  • For the first point of the second quarter, Kiyomi McMiller found Adams for a jumper to increase the team's lead.  
  • McMiller followed up with back-to-back buckets to force a Caldwell timeout with 7:07 to play and a score of 30-12.  
  • McMiller and Adams continued to produce on offense, as Adams added another layup and McMiller her first three of the day. Rutgers kept the Cougars scoreless until the 5:38 mark to stay up, 35-14. McMiller netted 11 points in the second quarter alone. 
  • Petticord and Lacey also contributed, as Petticord recording her second three of the contest and Lacey a turnaround jumper to stay ahead.   
  • Adams closed out the first half for the Scarlet Knights with six consecutive points to give Rutgers the 50-23 lead going into the locker room.  
  • The Cougars opened the third with a three, but RU responded quickly as Perkins secured a layup and free throw to widen the gap, 53-25. 
  •  Both teams went back and forth, mostly at the free throw line, but the Scarlet Knights still dominated, leading 64-34 at the 5:25 mark.  
  • Lacey added two more from the charity stripe and Perkins followed up with a big three-point play.  
  • McMiller recorded her second three-pointer off a great look from Petticord to keep the offense going.  
  • Caldwell recorded a jumper to end the third down, 78-37.  
  • Cornwell opened the scoring in the final 10-minute stretch with an aggressive three-point play to add to the lead, 81-42.  
  • The forwards came up big on offense for RU as Lacey, Perkins and Cornwell combined for five points.  
  • At the period's halfway mark, Caldwell called a timeout after back-to-back threes from Kennedy Brandt and Lacey. Rutgers increased its lead to 48 points.  
 
  • Cornwell and Janae Walker capped off a solid performance for Rutgers with two more three-point plays and solidify the victory, 101-48. 

 

Knights Notes 

  • Rutgers owned the advantage in points off turnovers (18-0), in the paint (42-16), second chance (31-6), fast breaks (31-6) and off the bench (35-21).  
  • The Scarlet Knights held Caldwell to a game-low 11 points twice, in both the second and fourth quarters. RU also netted 28 points in the second for a 17-point difference, the highest of the day.  
  • RU dominated on defense, beating the Cougars off the glass, 63-40, and forcing 20 turnovers.  
  • The team also held the advantage in steals (13-5), blocks (11-3) and assists (14-9). Bates led the team in both helpers (4) and denials (3) while Adams paced the squad in takeaways (5).  
  • Every Scarlet Knight that was available for Sunday's exhibition recorded at least three points.  
  • Rutgers did not give up the lead once and lead by a game-high of 54 points with 25 seconds to play in the contest.  
  • No one for the Cougars reached double-digits in any statistical category.
