BLACKSBURG, Va. — Despite a great effort on the road, Rutgers women's basketball (4-1) fell to Virginia Tech (4-1), 91-80, on Tuesday night. Â
The game stayed extremely close through the first three quarters, so much so that the lead changed 19 times, and the teams were tied 22 times. The score differential never exceeded six points until the fourth quarter. Â
Kiyomi McMiller netted 24 points to pace RU while Destiny Adams (18) and Chyna Cornwell (12) also reached double figures. Three Scarlet Knights led the team with six rebounds apiece, including Adams, Cornwell and JoJo Lacey.Â
How it HappenedÂ
- Virginia Tech hit two free throws to start the match, but Rutgers matched it with a three from Destiny Adams to keep it tied early. Minutes later Kiyomi McMiller hit a mid-range jumper to go ahead. Â
- JoJo Lacey, Lisa Thompson and more added buckets but the Hokies matched every point. The teams were tied, 8-8, at the 3:57 media timeout. Â
- Out of the break, McMiller cashed in on a layup and a three-pointer, but VT continued to produce on offense to get in front, 16-14, with just under 1:30 to go. Â
- Mya Petticord hit a three to tie it up, but once again the Hokies had the answer with their own shot from beyond the arc to take the 19-16 edge in the second 10 minutes. Â
- Thompson fought through the defense to hit a jumper for the first points of the second quarter and put the contest within one, 19-18. Â
- Mya Petticord hit from the charity stripe and at the 7:47 mark, Zachara Perkins hit a deep ball to put RU in front, 23-19. Â
- VT added two shots from the line and a layup at the period's halfway point to knot the score 23-all and force a timeout from the Scarlet Knights.Â
- Out of the stop, Adams scored on a driving layup, but VT was close behind with three foul shots to keep it even, 25-25. Â
- However, with just over four minutes left in the half, Adams hit on a three-point while Perkins added four points, to put RU back on top by one, 31-30. Â
- Chyna Cornwell recorded five points to end the period, including a three-point play of her own to keep the lead, 36-34. VT netted two points in their final possession of the opening half to go into the locker room with another tie, 36-all. Â
- Both teams started the third period with more back and forth buckets. Virginia Tech hit a three-pointer with just over seven minutes to play to widen the gap, 44-40. Â
- McMiller gave her team a spark however, netting seven points, in addition to a field goal from Lacey, to put RU on top, 49-44. The 9-0 run forced a Hokie timeout at the 4:47 mark. Â
- Out of the stop, Adams added two free throws and McMiller hit back-to-back three balls to keep the offense going. Virginia Tech also added eight points in the span but they still trailed, 57-56. Â
- The Hokies added a last second deep shot to take the 59-57 lead into the final 10 minutes.Â
- Adams netted the first four points of the fourth quarter, but VT once again met the challenge with two layups. McMiller collected two shots from the charity stripe to tie the contest, 63-63, at 8:27. Â
- After more trips up and down the floor for both teams, Perkins hit one from the line and Cornwell came up with a clutch offensive board and putback to regain the one-point lead, 86-67. Â
- The teams continued to go bucket for bucket, but VT hit a three just before a Scarlet Knights' timeout at 4:50. The Hokies regained control, 72-70. Â
- After the stop, Virginia Tech put together a 9-0 run to pull away, 81-70. Rutgers used its second timeout with 2:49 left in regulation. Â
- Lacey, Cornwell, Adams and Perkins all added points down the stretch, but it wasn't enough as VT came out on top, 91-80. Â
Knights NotesÂ
- McMiller's 24 points marks the second-best performance in her young career and her second game with 20+ points. She had 17 points in the second half. Â
- McMiller also recorded two blocks to tie her career high. Â
- Adams netted 18 points, her fifth contest this season with 10+ points. She was 8-of-10 from the field. Â
- Dating back to last season, Adams has reached double digit points in 22 consecutive contests.Â
- Lisa Thompson recorded four assists, a season best and just one shy of her career high. Â
- RU recorded seven blocks, four more than VT. Â

Rutgers will return home to Jersey Mike's Arena to face in-state rival Princeton on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. Â
The Scarlet Knights will be hosting a Toy Drive at the game, encouraging fans to bring new and unwrapped donations with a value of $20 or more for drop off outside the Arena. Those who donate will receive a $10 concessions voucher to be used at Sunday's game.Â
