PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers women's basketball team (4-3) fell to Marquette (3-2), 59-57, at Jersey Mike's Arena on the first day of the Battle on the Banks tournament Friday afternoon.Â
The tight contest featured eight lead changes, seven of which came in the fourth quarter. Â
Kiyomi McMiller led the way for the Scarlet Knights scoring 19 points to go along with seven rebounds. She also went an impressive 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Lisa Thompson also reached double digit points with 10 in addition to three steals and career-high three blocks.Â
How it HappenedÂ
- Marquette jumped out to the early 2-0 lead but a steal by Kiyomi McMiller and a Destiny Adams bucket tied the game with just over eight minutes to go.Â
- Rutgers and the Golden Eagles traded baskets for the next four minutes and went to the 4:37 media timeout with Marquette up by one, 7-6.Â
- Right out of the stop, Mya Petticord gave RU its first lead of the game with a jumper.Â
- Both defenses stepped up to end the first quarter tied at nine apiece.Â
- The Scarlet Knights started the second period hot, rattling off six consecutive points to force a Marquette timeout at 8:05.Â
- The Golden Eagles did not go quietly however, going on their own six-point run to tie the game at 15 with just over six minutes to play.Â
- McMiller broke the tie and started a 13-2 RU stretch for RUÂ to end the first half. Mya Petticord sank a beyond-the-arc shot and Lisa Thompson recorded a layup with 34 seconds left gave Rutgers the double-digit lead, 28-17.Â
- McMiller drained a three coming back from the locker room, but Marquette added five points before a media timeout at 6:20.Â
- The Golden Eagles continued to chip away, scoring five more points after a jumper by Zachara Perkins. Rutgers still remained in control though, 33-27, at the 4:46 media timeout.Â
- The two teams would trade baskets the final three minutes of the quarter with Thompson, Adams and Chyna Cornwell all getting to the net. Heading into the final 10 minutes, Rutgers remained on top, 41-37. Â
- Marquette got on the board first in the final 10 minutes but Cornwell and McMiller answered with two consecutive baskets to put RU up six.Â
- The Golden Eagles came storming all the way back scoring seven points in 46 seconds and taking the one-point lead into the 7:24 media timeout.Â
- McMiller hit a jumper coming out of the stoppage to give the Scarlet Knights back the lead, but Marquette answered again with two free throws and another lead change.Â
- McMiller's huge three-point shot changed the lead once again, putting Rutgers up 50-48 with 6:19 remaining.Â
- Marquette took advantage at the charity stripe, netting four straight free throws to take their own two-point lead with 4:20 left in the contest.Â
- A layup from Thompson tied the game but was negated by another Marquette score. However, McMiller hit yet another go-ahead three-pointer to put the Scarlet Knights up one, 57-54, with just over two minutes to go.Â
- A three-pointer and two free throws with time running out gave Marquette the ultimate win, 59-57.Â

Knights NotesÂ
- Kiyomi McMiller notched her fifth straight double figure game with 19 points. Â
- Chyna Cornwell recorded her fifth double-digit rebound game of the season with 10 boards.Â
- JoJo Lacey grabbed four steals in the contest, a season high. Â
- Lisa Thompson set a career high with three blocks, the first multi-stop game of her career. Mya Petticord also set a career high in blocks with two.Â
- RU outscored Marquette 19-8 in the second quarter.Â
- Rutgers totaled 11 steals on Friday, the most in a game this season.Â
- The Scarlet Knights forced 24 turnovers from the Golden Eagles, the most this slate. Â
