Katie Wingert Blasts Three More Home Runs In Wins Over Houston & Colgate

HOUSTON, Texas --- Katie Wingert added three more home runs and five more RBIs on day two of the Houston Invitational in helping lead Rutgers softball to a 4-0 start with a 10-2 victory over the host Cougars and a 7-4 win against Colgate.

Mattie Boyd and Morgan Smith both pitched complete game victories while the Scarlet Knight bats produced 26 hits in the day's two games.

RU was down early against Houston with the Cougars taking a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat before Rutgers took the lead in the third scoring 10 unanswered runs.

The Scarlet Knights overcame a 4-0 deficit in game two of the day versus Colgate tying up the game in the top of the fifth and getting three runs in the sixth to take the lead.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Katie Wingert made it the third-straight game with a dinger and ended the game 3-for-4.
  • Morgan Smith posted her first home run of the season and totaled a team-leading three runs.
  • Altogether, 10 different Scarlet Knights registered a hit.
  • Mattie Boyd registered her second-straight complete game allowing two runs on three hits along with a pair of strikeouts to improve to 2-0 inside the circle.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Hosts plated two in the first inning capitalizing on a bases-loaded situation with a sac fly from Bree Bantu and Mikalah Nitta later scoring on a wild pitch. However, it would be the only runs the Cougars would get.
  • Rutgers took the lead in the top of the third. The Scarlet Knights took advantage of a Houston miscue as Morgan Smith's fielder's choice had the Cougars overthrow first in trying to get the double play allowing Kyleigh Sand to score. Katie Wingert followed smacking her first pitch over the wall in left for a two-run shot and a 3-2 RU advantage.
  • The Scarlet Knights added another run in the next inning. Payton Lincavage took a trip around the bases with a single to center, stolen base and groundout and came home on a Maddie Lawson sac fly.
  • Rutgers grew the lead with three runs in the fifth and another trio in the sixth.
  • The fifth inning saw Jillian Anderson reach on a bunt. While the Scarlet Knight newcomer beat the throw, it was errant resulting in Smith scoring. Lincavage fouled out at the next at-bat and while the Cougars were trying to stop a potential sac fly, a throwing error was made allowing Bailey Briggs to come home. Kayla Bock was the next to the plate delivering an RBI single on her birthday to put RU up 7-2.
  • RU added on in the sixth with a Morgan Smith solo shot to to right-center, Jillian Anderson coming across on an error on a Lincavage double and Kobie Hura adding an RBI single.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Katie Wingert helped Rutgers come from behind with a 2-for-3 performance including a pair of home runs and three RBIs.
  • Morgan Smith got the win inside the circle tossing a complete game with six strikeouts to up her mark to 2-0 while going 3-for-3 at the plate.
  • Kyleigh Sand and LA Matthews also had a pair of hits in the win.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Colgate put up four runs in the bottom of the second. A miscue in the outfield had the Raiders plate the game's first run. With runners in scoring position runs continued with Nora Megenity getting a run batted in on a fielder's choice, a double steal plating Elizabeth Niitka and Megenity scoring on a groundout. 
  • The Scarlet Knight's comeback started when the RU bats got back to the plate as Katie Wingert crushed the ball for a two-run home run to put her squad up on the board.
  • Kyleigh Sand doubled in the fourth and cut the Rutgers deficit to one scoring on a LA Matthews single to left-center.
  • The ball game was tied up at 4-4 in the fifth as Kayla Bock doubled to right-center to score Payton Lincavage.
  • RU took the lead in the sixth. LA Matthews gave the Scarlet Knight the lead reaching on a fielder's choice and then proceeded to round the bases on three consecutive wild pitches. Two batters later, Katie Wingert connected for her second home run of the game and third of the day with a two-run bomb to left and a 7-4 Rutgers lead.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • With her three home runs on Saturday, Katie Wingert moved into a tie for second all-time in home runs "On The Banks" with 34 career dingers. She needs six more to tie Jackie Bates (2012-15) as RU's all-time home run leader.
  • It also marked the second time Katie Wingert has had three consecutive games with home runs. She also went over the fence in consecutive games against Tennessee Tech on March 9, 2019 and Saint Joseph's on March 15, 2019 in her freshman campaign.
  • Wingert also moved up to fifth all-time in RBIs at Rutgers having totaled 115 to date. She needs 20 more to move up to fourth past Brittney Lindley (2009-12).
