Spilis Nets 200th Career Goal, Women's Lacrosse Downs Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Rutgers women's lacrosse (2-0) defeated Georgetown (2-1), 13-6, on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. Graduate student Cassidy Spilis tallied a game-high five goals against the Hoyas, becoming the first player in program history to net 200 career goals.

The Scarlet Knights never trailed Georgetown, using a 34-21 shot advantage and a seven-goal differential in the first 30 minutes of play to secure their second consecutive win. With her five goals, Spilis sits at 203 for her career. Senior Ashley Moynahan and sophomore Lily Dixon added two goals apiece, while junior Victoria Goldrick dished out a game-high four assists.

Senior goalkeeper Sophia Cardellowas outstanding between the pipes, stopping 10 shots for her second win of the season. Moynahan and senior Lauren Messinese each caused two turnovers.

Rutgers raced out to an early 4-1 lead, with Spilis' third goal during the run off a feed from Goldrick giving the Scarlet Knights a three-goal lead with 8 minutes to go in the opening quarter.

RU shutout the Hoyas in the second quarter, outscoring the home team, 5-0, before the break. Spilis scored twice, while Moynahan, sophomore Alexa Corbin and freshman Payton Tini all added goals to give Rutgers a 9-2 advantage at halftime.

The Scarlet Knights' continued to play stout defense out of the locker room, holding Georgetown to just four goals in the final 30 minutes of play. The Hoyas added back-to-back goals to close the game, but Rutgers held on for the 13-6 win.

Up Next
Rutgers hosts back-to-back home games next week, beginning with Monmouth on Wednesday, February 21 for a 6 p.m. matchup at SHI Stadium. The Scarlet Knights also face No. 18 Army on Saturday, February 21 at 1 p.m. in Piscataway.
