COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Rutgers women's basketball (8-21, 2-14 B1G) was defeated by Maryland (16-10, 8-7 B1G), 81-62, on Wednesday night on the road.
Destiny Adams paced the team with 15 points while Kassondra Brown and Lisa Thompson also added 11 points a piece.
Adams, Brown and Chyna Cornwell all recorded eight rebounds each to lead the team.
The Scarlet Knights kept the score close after the first quarter, only trailing by five points. However, the Terps broke away in the second, taking a double-digit lead into halftime and kept it more the rest of the contest.
How it Happened
- Chyna Cornwell got Rutgers on the board with the first score of the game. Maryland quickly answered with a three and a pair of free throws to take an early 5-2 edge.
- The two teams traded possessions as Destiny Adams netted back-to-back field goals to keep the score within three- 9-6.
- It was Adams again who broke up a 7-1 run for the Terrapins with a layup just before the quarter's halfway point. The opposition went into the media timeout up, 16-9.
- Out of the stop, Adams responded yet again with another jumper in a low shot clock to give her eight points in the opening 4:25 of play and to cut the difference back to five points.
- The teams once again took turns scoring as Cornwell recorded back-to-back layups for the Scarlet Knights. However, the Terps stayed in control to end the opening 10 minutes of action with the slight 21-16 advantage.
- Maryland started off the second period scoring 10 unanswered points to go up, 31-16, and force an RU timeout with 5:53 to go in the half. Maryland continued its run after the break, extending its run to 14 points. Kassondra Brown put an end to the stretch with two free throws with just over two minutes to go.
- Adams added another bucket before the end of the opening half, but the Terrapins still emerged with the 43-20 lead going into the locker room.
- Both teams came out in the third quarter on the offensive, trading buckets. Mya Petticord scored consecutive jumpers while Brown added a big three-point play to give the Scarlet Knights a spark.
- Jillian Huerter and Petticord followed up with back-to-back three-pointers to force a Terps' timeout at the 6:15 mark and lessen the gap, 53-32. UMD added two more baskets to RU's one going into the 4:01 media timeout.
- Rutgers put together a 11-0 run, earning four consecutive stops on defense to continue to cut into the opponents lead. Adams hit another big three-point play to lead the charge.
- Maryland scored its first bucket since the 4:00 mark with under a minute to play but Brown answered with a buzzer beater to end the third quarter with a score of 60-47.
- Both teams once again started off the final 10 minutes matching each other's scores on offense. Maryland broke through with two baskets in a row to stay ahead, 70-55.
- The Scarlet Knights continued to fight however as Huerter hit her second shot from deep of the outing to keep the offense hot. The Terrapins remained in front by 12 at the 4:44 media timeout.
- UMD ended the contest on a 9-2 run to come out with the 81-62 victory.
Knights Notes
- Adams ended the contest with 15 points. She has now recorded double-digit points in the past 14 contests and 10+ points 24 times this season. The junior has also led the squad in scoring in 11 outings.
- Antonia Bates led the team with four assists. She paces the team with 90 total helpers. Brown also registered three dimes and has recorded 3+ dishes in six of the last eight outings.
- The Scarlet Knights secured 14 assists against the Terrapins, the team's 20th outing of the season with 10+ helpers.
- RU bested UMD in second chance points (11-10) and off the bench (24-22).
- Rutgers outscored Maryland by 10 points, 27-17, in the third quarter.

Rutgers will continue its two-game road stint as the team travels to Michigan State Saturday, Feb. 24 (2 p.m.).
