Women's Lacrosse Loses Tough Matchup with No. 2 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Rutgers women's lacrosse (5-5, 0-3) lost to No. 2 Maryland (9-1, 2-0) on Sunday afternoon in College Park. The Scarlet Knights cut the Terrapins lead to just two early in the fourth quarter before the home team closed the game with a 3-0 scoring run for the win.

Graduate student Cassidy Spilis netted a team-high five goals to go over 40 in a season for the fourth consecutive year. Now with 246 career points, Spilis needs just 21 to pass current assistant coach Taralyn Naslonski for the most in school history.

Junior Michelle Warren, sophomore Ava Kane and rookie Payton Tini all added goals, while junior Emalie Clothier and sophomore Lily Dixon each dished out an assist to help pace the offense with Spilis. Senior goalkeeper stopped 10 shots in the loss for her fifth double-digit save outing of the season.

Maryland used a 17-7 advantage on the draw and a 27-21 shot advantage to pick up its sixth consecutive win. Hannah Leubecker produced a game-high seven points on six goals and a helper to pace UMD's offense.

The Terrapins outscored RU 6-1 in the opening quarter before RU shutout the home team in the second. Cardello saved three shots during the defensive run, while unassisted goals from Kane and Spilis down the stretch made it just a 6-3 game at halftime.

Both squads traded scoring in the third quarter, with back-to-back goals from Spilis and Warren making it 8-6 with 4:42 on the clock. Maryland followed with two goals of its own before Spilis and Tini added goals bring the game back within two. However, the Terrapins used a 3-0 scoring in in the final 13 minutes of the game to leave with the win.
