Nebraska Comes Back To Take Series From Softball

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers softball held a 6-1 edge heading into the sixth inning against Nebraska on Sunday at the RU Softball Complex, but the Cornhuskers came back with five runs to send the game into extra innings and take the series in a 7-6 decision in extra innings.

The loss dropped RU 26-18 overall and 8-6 in the Big Ten. Nebraska, who took the series 2-1, improved to 25-16 overall and 8-3 in league play.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Kyleigh Sand was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Morgan Smith produced a league-leading seventh sac fly and came across home twice, including a stolen base.
  • Payton Lincavage smacked her seventh home run of the year.
  • Mattie Boyd tossed all eight innings giving up two earned runs while fanning four Cornhuskers.
THE RUNDOWN
  • A misplay in the outfield gave Morgan Smith her seventh sacrifice fly of the season as the play allowed Kyleigh Sand to score. Smith later gave RU a 2-0 lead by stealing home.
  • The Scarlet Knights added two more in the third. Kyleigh Sand led off with a walk and made her way over to third on a wild pitch and stolen base. The junior Scarlet Knights collected her second run of the game scoring on a squeeze bunt from Katie Wingert.
  • A fielding error by the Cornhuskers allowed the inning to continue for Smith to score her second run of the afternoon.
  • Nebraska got onto the scoreboard in the fourth as Neal led off with a home run.
  • Rutgers got the run back in the bottom of the inning for a 5-1 lead on a Sand single to right to plate Maddie Lawson, who opened the Scarlet Knight at-bat with a double.
  • Payton Lincavage went over the wall in left extending the RU advantage to 6-1 after five played.
  • The Cornhuskers, however, brought across five runs in the sixth to knot the score at 6-6. A Sydney Gray double to left field pushed the first Nebraska run across. The bases were loaded for back-to-back fielder's choices from Katelyn Caneda and Peyton Cody to score a pair of runs for the visitors. Another two more were scored on a Samantha Bland double to center to tie up the game.
  • Billie Andrews walked and advanced to second on a Caneda sac bunt before scoring what would prove to be the game-winning run on a base hit to deep center field from Cody.
NEBRASKA SERIES NOTES
  • Morgan Smith totaled two home runs to bring her season total to 19 on the year, along with six RBIs, five runs scored and a 1.143 slugging percentage.
  • Kyleigh Sand led RU at the plate during the series hitting .625 going 5-for-8 with a double and RBI and scored six of RU's 20 runs on the weekend.
  • Leilani Chavez added three hits, two doubles and two runs.
  • Mattie Boyd threw two complete games upped her season total to 15. She collected nine strikeouts across her 15.0 innings of work.
UP NEXT
  • Rutgers softball is on the road for its next seven games starting with a mid-week contest at LIU on Tuesday, April 16 followed by weekend series at Minnesota and Michigan State.
