Softball Collects First-Ever Series Win Over Minnesota in 6-1 Finale Victory

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Rutgers softball has another series win in the book as the Scarlet Knights topped Minnesota 6-1 in the finale for the first-ever series victory over the Golden Gophers on Sunday at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.

It marked the fourth series win of the season and the third first-time series victory.  RU has now captured series wins over Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin all for the first time since joining the Big Ten beginning with the 2015 season.

The win improved RU to 29-19 and 10-7 in Big Ten play.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Mattie Boyd pitched her 17th complete game of the season improving to 17-7 overall. She struck out six and allowed no earned runs on five hits.
  • Kyleigh Sand batted 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
  • LA Matthews was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
  • Jillian Anderson also added a pair of runs.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Minnesota got onto the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom of the second. Nani Valencia started off the bottom half reaching on an infield error, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single to cent from Breezy Burnett.
  • Rutgers, however, tied the score at 1-1 with their next plate appearance. Kayla Bock's fly ball to right was dropped allowing the senior Scarlet Knight to reach second. She advanced on a sac bunt by Jillian Anderson and scored on a sac fly to center by Kyleigh Sand.
  • The Scarlet Knights took the lead in the fifth. Jillian Anderson walked while Sand singled with a hard-hit base hit off the glove of the diving Gopher first baseman to put a pair of Scarlet Knights aboard. LA Matthews ripped the ball into center plating Anderson for the go-ahead run. Morgan Smith followed with a walk to load the bases and Minnesota went to the bullpen. Maddie Lawson hit into a fielder's choice, but it allowed Sand to score for a 3-1 Rutgers lead.
  • RU added a trio of runs in the following inning. Leilani Chavez and Anderson both singled and with two outs Kyleigh Sand collected an RBI single to right center while Matthews went deep to left center to score two more runs for a 6-1 Scarlet Knight advantage.

  • Rutgers softball heads off for its final regular season Big Ten road series traveling to East Lansing, Michigan to meet up with Michigan State for a three-game series beginning Friday, April 26.
