Ann Arbor, Mich. – Rutgers track and field earned its highest team finishes on both the men's and women's side, capping off a standout performance at the 2024 Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
Bryce Tucker gave the Scarlet Knights a gold medal on the final day, highlighting six individual medals (one gold, one silver, four bronze) and 23 podium finishes.
"I'm very proud of both teams," said
Bobby Farrell, director of track and field & cross country. "We keep getting better and better every year. It's been a process building and developing these squads. It's not an overnight mission and we're going to keep climbing every year. This is a very talented team and they keep learning and growing every season. Now we get ready for NCAAs."
For his win in the 400-meter hurdles, Tucker was named First Team All-Big Ten at the conclusion of the outdoor championships.
Chloe Timberg earned a spot on the Second Team All-Big Ten list with her runner-up finish in the pole vault.
Alianna Eucker and
Jah'mere Beasley were the recipients of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Awards following the conclusion of the 2024 outdoor championships.
On the men's side, the Scarlet Knights scored 54 points to finish ninth out of 13 squads, marking the highest team point total in program history at the outdoor championships and matches the best team finish since 2019. The women's squad tallied 36 points, earning an eighth-place finish out of 13 squads, its highest team finish in program history at the outdoor conference meet.
Tucker, a U20 Pan American Champion for Team USA, outpaced all competitors in the 400-meter hurdles with a winning and personal-best time of 50.61. Tucker was part of a scoring trio for the Scarlet Knights that included
Jameson Woodell in fourth (52.08) and
Lathan Brown in eighth (53.50).
Shamali Whittle added points for the men's squad, securing podium finishes in two events. Whittle placed sixth in both races, running a time of 10.36 in the 100-meter and 20.70 in the 200-meter.
The men's team gained a scoring boost in the men's field events with points coming in the pole vault and discus.
Brian O'Sullivan and
Noah Kriesman went 3-4 in the pole vault as O'Sullivan captured a bronze medal, clearing a height of 5.26m (17' 3"). Kriesman placed fourth with his mark of 5.26m (16' 11").
Konstantinos Bouzakis gave the Scarlet Knights their sixth medal of the weekend with his bronze performance in the discus, recording a throw of 58.37m (191' 6").
The women's squad shined on the track as
Alex Carlson added a third-place finish in the 1,500-meter with a time of 4:15.78, earning her career Big Ten Championship medal. Carlson also finished eighth in the 5,000-meter, running a time of 16:31.32.
Shelby Whetstone placed fifth in the 800-meter, crossing the finish line in 2:05.58, while
Reanda Richards placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.78.
Charlee Crawford finished seventh in the 400-meter (54.07),
Icisys Sadler placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles (13.61) and
Sydney Hawkins took eighth in the 100-meter (11.43).
Rutgers earned podium finishes from all four of its relay squads. The men's 4x400-meter team finished fourth as Tucker, Brown,
Micah Wood, and
Jah'mere Beasley combined to run a time of 3:07.80. In the 4x100-meter relay, the men placed fifth with Beasley, Whittle,
Greg McQueen and
James Bivins running a time of 40.01. The women's 4x400-meter team of Crawford, Whetstone,
Celine-Jada Brown and
Cynthia Boakye clocked 3:37.54 to place fourth. The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Boakye,
Azariah Grantham,
Jada Ellis and
Sydney Hawkins finished seventh in 44.85.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action for the NCAA East First Round, which will be held Wednesday, May 22 through Saturday, May 25 in Lexington, Kentucky.
