Sinibaldi, Santa Maria Selected in 2024 MLB Draft

ARLINGTON, Texas – Rutgers baseball wrapped up the 2024 MLB Draft with two more Scarlet Knights – LHP Justin Sinibaldi and INF Tony Santa Maria – hearing their names called on day three of the draft on Tuesday.

Sinibaldi became the third Rutgers player selected in the draft when he was taken in the 14th round with the 409th overall pitch by the Chicago White Sox. A native of Bridgewater, New Jersey, Sinibaldi had a very strong 2024 season where he emerged as the team's top starting pitcher and earned All-Big Ten Third Team honors. He made 13 starts and went 4-4 with a 3.47 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 65 strikeouts in 83 innings and held opponents to a .225 batting average. He was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week after pitching a shutout against UConn and totaled eight quality starts, pitched into the seventh inning seven times and had three outings of eight innings or more. In his career, Sinibaldi appeared in 58 games (33 starts), posting a 12-6 record, 4.14 ERA, 163 strikeouts in 197.2 innings pitched and a .257 batting average against.

Santa Maria was the fourth Scarlet Knight taken when the Tampa Bay Rays picked him in the 19th round with the 576th overall pick. A native of Abescon, New Jersey, Santa Maria hit .324 this past season with a 1.022 OPS and led the team with 14 home runs and 55 RBIs, starting all 53 games at third base. In 2022, Santa Maria hit .303 with 10 home runs and 69 RBIs, the latter of which ranks third in RU history for a single season. Despite missing the majority of 2023 due to injury, Santa Maria posted a career average of .315 with 24 home runs, 126 RBIs, a .979 OPS, 116 runs scored, 22 stolen bases and five triples.

Sinibaldi and Santa Maria join Josh Kuroda-Grauer (Oakland, Rd, 3, #75) and Donovan Zsak (Cleveland, Rd. 8, #235) as Rutgers players chosen in the 2024 MLB Draft. The program's four selections in a single draft are the most since 2007, when RU had five players selected.

The selections of Zsak and Kuroda-Grauer on Monday gave Rutgers multiple MLB Draft selections for the third straight season, with 2024 also marking the third straight season RU has produced multiple picks in the top 11 rounds of the draft. Previously, there had never been back-to-back MLB Drafts with two Rutgers players selected in the top 11 rounds.
