Rutgers Athletics Announces 2023-24 Award Winners

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers Athletics announced its 2023-24 award winners on Thursday. The honors for Rutgers student-athletes include Male and Female Athlete of the Year for each academic year, Bauer Athlete of the Year, the Big Ten Medal of Honor, the Coursen Award, the Headley-Singer Award and the Werblin Award. This award is given to one male and one female student-athlete of the freshman class and is based on athletic success during the most recent academic year/season.

Freshman of the Year

This award is given to one male and one female student-athlete of the freshman class and is based on athletic success during the most recent academic year/season.

Cardin Stoller

Cardin Stoller (Men's Lacrosse)

Stoller had a breakout debut season as the team’s starting goalkeeper. The redshirt freshman posted a 54.1% save percentage and 11.24 goals-against-average with 173 saves. The Owing Mills, Md. native had nine games of 10+ saves and five games of at least 15 stops, including twice making 19 saves (UMass and at Michigan). Stoller was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, becoming the program’s third Big Ten Freshman of the Year since 2016 and eighth major award winner in the Big Ten overall. During the season, he was named a four-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week, two-time Big Ten Specialist of the Week and was recognized as the USA Lacrosse Magazine Division I National Player of the Week following his backstopping the team to the win over UMass.

Chiara Saccomando (Rowing)

Saccomando worked her way into the stroke seat of the 2nd Varsity 8 during championship season of the 2024 campaign. The Freiburg, Germany native helped lead Rutgers' 2V8 to a silver medal at the Big Ten Championships, where they kept a close pace with No. 9 Michigan throughout the first 1,500 meters of the 2,000-meter race before the Wolverines pulled ahead at the finish. The medal-winning performance helped RU place third in the conference as a team, tying their best Big Ten finish. At the NCAA Championships, the 2V8 led their C final at the 500 and 1,000-meter checkpoints before Syracuse pulled just a seat or two ahead down the stretch for a 1.1-second margin of victory at the line. Rutgers matched its 14th-place national finish from last spring, finishing second in their C final ahead of Duke, Indiana, Gonzaga, and Boston University.

Sophomore of the Year

This award is given to one male and one female student-athlete of the sophomore class and is based on athletic success during the most recent academic year/season.

Jai Patel (Football)

Patel recorded the most accurate field goal season in program history, converting 15-of-18 (83.3 percent) attempts. The performance garnered Third Team All-Big Ten in the media vote. The Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, native went 13-of-14 on kicks inside of 50 yards, while adding two makes of at least 50 yards. The season included four games with multiples makes and twice going 3-for-3. He hit from a season-long 51 yards versus Temple on the way to earning Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week. Patel added 33 extra points for a team-best 78 points and collected Academic All-Big Ten accolades.

Puck Winter (Field Hockey)

Winter followed up her 2022 Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Year season with an outstanding sophomore campaign. Winter in 2023 was named a Second Team All-American, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, and was a First Team All-Big Ten and First Team All-Region selection after the fall season. A native of Deventer in The Netherlands, Winter was a presence on both ends of the field, as she led the nation with 12 defensive saves, and also posted eight goals, which was second on the team. She was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, to the NFHCA National Academic Squad and an Academic All-Big Ten selection. 

Junior of the Year

This award is given to one male and one female student-athlete of the junior class and is based on athletic success during the most recent academic year/season.

Kyle Monangai (Football)

The Big Ten's leading rusher in 2023, Monangai racked up 1,262 rushing yards with seven 100-yard games and three with 150 or more yards. The running back was voted Second Team All-Big Ten, ranked No. 12 nationally, second in the league and sixth in the school record book with 242 carries. He scored eight touchdowns, including a score on 163 rushing yards to garner MVP in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl win over Miami. The Roseland, New Jersey, native rated as the top running back in the Big Ten, best in the Power 5 and No. 5 nationally by Pro Football Focus. Monangai is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Dylan Shawver

Dylan Shawver (Wrestling)

Shawver delivered 27 victories this past season, which included a dominant 23-8 tech fall over Dylan Ragusin (Michigan) to claim the program's first individual Big Ten title since Anthony Ashnault and Nick Suriano both won in 2019. Shawver followed with a 4-2 mark at the 2024 NCAA Championships en route to a seventh-place finish and All-America laurels at 133 pounds. Shawver lead the team with 53 team points during the dual campaign and finished 2023-24 with a team-high 11 victories over ranked foes. For his efforts on the mat, Shawver shared the program's Ted Petty Most Valuable Wrestler Award with fellow All-American Yaraslau Slavikouski.

Chloe Timberg (Women's Track & Field)

All-American Chloe Timberg capped off a record-setting outdoor campaign, winning a National Championship in the pole vault. The Doylestown, Pennsylvania native set the NCAA Outdoor Championship meet and school record with her 4.71m (15' 5.5") height at Hayward Field. The win for Timberg gave the Scarlet Knights their first national champion in track and field since 1983 and the first women's NCAA Championship in program history. Her outdoor season also included capturing silver in the Big Ten Outdoor Championships and setting the meet and Franklin Field record at the Penn Relays. Timberg won the Big Ten Indoor Championship, also setting the meet record. She concluded the season with a third-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She was also named the Big Ten Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, Big Ten Field Athlete of the Indoor Championships and was recognized by the USTFCCCA as the Mid-Atlantic Field Athlete of the Year.

Senior of the Year

This award is given to one male and one female student-athlete of the senior class and is based on athletic success during the most recent academic year/season. This category will encompass any individual who is a senior/5th year/6th year.

Shane Knobloch (Men's Lacrosse)

Knobloch finished his Rutgers career this past season as just the second four-time All-American in program history and first since 1980. The Moorestown, N.J. native was a First Team All-American this past season across three publications and was named the Lt. Donald MacLaughlin Jr. Outstanding Midfielder of the Year by the USILA, the first winner of the award for the nation’s best midfielder in program history. This season, he was also named First Team All-Big Ten and to the Tewaaraton Award Top 25 Watch List as he scored 29 goals, leading the team, and placed second on the squad with 11 assists for 40 points. He scored multiple goals in 11 games with five hat tricks and had a team-high four man-up goals. In his career, Knobloch played in 60 games, scoring 98 goals and adding 49 assists for 147 points. He was a three-time All-Big Ten selection, twice making the First Team, and was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2021. A two-time All-ECAC selection, he was a Scholar All-American this past season. Knobloch was the fourth overall draft pick in the First Round of the Premier Lacrosse Collegiate Draft, the highest drafted player in program history, and currently plays for the Carolina Chaos in the PLL.

Morgan Smith (Softball)

Morgan Smith was a two-time All-American in her final season “On The Banks” earning the program's first NFCA All-American distinction with second team honors along with First Team All-America honors from Softball America. The ECAC Player of the Year was also named the No. 1 two-way player in the country by in Softball America's final position rankings. Smith was a unanimous First Team All-Big Ten honoree and recognized on the Big Ten All-Defensive Team for the second-consecutive season. Her play helped contribute to Rutgers' first-ever back-to-back 30-win seasons, a program record for Big Ten victories and Big Ten series wins and the highest Big Ten Tournament seed since joining the league in 2015. Smith set new school records for season RBIs and helped RU break the school record for team record for single-season runs scored and runs batted in During the 2024 campaign, Smith hit .408 on the year behind 69 hits, 14 doubles, four triples and 19 home runs while collecting a Rutgers season-record 66 RBIs. At the start of NCAA Tournament play, she ranked 11th in home runs, sixth in RBIs, ninth in slugging percentage and fourth in sacrifice flies. Among her Big Ten peers, she led the league in RBIs, was second in home runs and slugging percentage, third in batting average, fourth in runs and triples and seventh in doubles. On defense, Smith held a .983 field percentage playing at both center field and pitcher having only made one error at each position on 118 chances. Altogether she collected 67 putouts and 49 assists.  Along with her time in center field, Smith also tossed 130.2 innings with 93 strikeouts inside the circle. She finished the season 11-10 overall with a 3.54 ERA in 30 appearances with 21 starts and seven complete games In addition to her single-season RBI record, Smith has placed her name in the Rutgers record book second in career batting average, eighth in career RBIs (112), ninth in career triples (6), second in season home runs (19), fourth in season hits (69), seventh in season batting average (.408) and tenth in season doubles (14).

Bauer Athlete of the Year

This award is given to the one male and one female student-athlete from any class who has consistently performed and excelled in athletic competition at a high level for the most recent academic year/season.

Josh Kuroda-Grauer (Baseball)

A junior from Somerset, New Jersey, Kuroda-Grauer put together one of the finest seasons in Rutgers history in 2024, emerging as one of the top shortstops in the country. He started all 53 games at shortstop for the Scarlet Knights, led the country in regular season hits (95) and hits/game (1.79), ranked second with a .428 batting average, stole 24 bases and committed just seven errors all season. Kuroda-Grauer also had 29 multi-hit games, 10 three-hit games and had a streak of five straight games with three-plus hits.

Owning a long list of accolades, Kuroda-Grauer was named Big Ten Player of the Year, the first time since Rutgers joined the conference in 2015 that a player received a major award from the Big Ten. He was also named All-Big Ten First Team, a Brooks Wallace Award finalist (top shortstop in country), a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist (top amateur player in country) and a Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist (national player of the year). He was named an All-American by five different outlets, receiving First Team All-America honors from Perfect Game, ABCA/Rawlings and College Baseball Hall of Fame. In the 2024 MLB Draft, Kuroda-Grauer was selected in the Third Round with the 75th overall pick by the Oakland Athletics. 

Iris Langejans (Field Hockey)

During the 2023 field hockey season, Langejans was named First Team AllAmerican, Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year, First Team All-Region, Big Ten Player of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten (unanimous selection) and to the NFHCA's Senior Game, as well as the Synapse Sports Defensive Player of the Year and All-ECAC. Langejans was one of four national finalists for the prestigious Honda Sport Award for Field Hockey. The native of Almelo in the Netherlands impacted the game at all levels this season, starting all 20 games at back, where she helped RU allow just 1.4 goals per game. She added one goal and six assists this season, and the redshirt senior posted five goals and 15 assists in her 61 game Rutgers career. Off the field, Langejans was recognized for her academics as a member of the NFHCA National Academic Squad. She is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Collegiate Athlete Honor Society.

Big Ten Medal of Honor

This award is given to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each Big Ten member institution who has attained the greatest proficiency in athletics and scholastic work.  The awardees will have demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their respective collegiate careers.

Cassidy Spilis

Cassidy Spilis (Women's Lacrosse)

The most prolific scorer in Rutgers women's lacrosse history, Spilis wrapped up her collegiate career as the program's all-time leader in career points (281), goals (266) and draw controls (313). In 81 career games, Spilis produced 281 points on 266 goals and 15 assists along with 313 draw controls, 149 ground balls and 102 caused turnovers. The Tabernacle, New Jersey, native was a two-time conference player of the year, four-time First Team All-Big Ten selection, three-time IWLCA All-American and three-time IWLCA All-Region pick. This past season, Spilis tallied 79 points on 74 goals and five helpers to go along with 98 draw controls, 40 ground balls and 36 caused turnovers, earning first team All-America, all-region and all conference recognition along with being named the 2024 Big Ten Midfielder of the Year. In the classroom, Spilis was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. Working towards her master's degree, Spilis was the Big Ten's Dr. Pepper College Football Playoff scholarship recipient - given to one student-athlete from across the conference each year.

Coursen Award

This award is for the most outstanding male student-athlete from the graduating class who, during his career at the university, has participated in the intercollegiate athletics program and proved himself to be an athlete of outstanding ability, and has shown determination, courage, modesty, and self-discipline and who, with unselfish devotion to his teammates and generous fairness to his opponents, has represented Rutgers University to the highest of standards.

Ross Scott (Men’s Lacrosse)

Scott was an All-American and First Team All-Big Ten selection this past season. He earned his highest career all-conference honors as the attackman scored 20 goals and had a team-high 25 assists for a team-best 45 points. The West Linn, Ore. native had six multi-goal games and two hat tricks. Scott finishes his career with 109 goals and 73 assists for 182 points in 66 games (52 starts), 11th all-time in program history in points and 12th in goals. He was drafted in the Third Round of the Premier Lacrosse League Collegiate Draft by the Carolina Chaos. 

Headley-Singer Award

This award is for the most outstanding female student-athlete from the graduating class who, during her career at the university, has participated in the intercollegiate athletics program and proved herself to be an athlete of outstanding ability, and has shown determination, courage, modesty, and self-discipline and who, with unselfish devotion to her teammates and generous fairness to her opponents, has represented Rutgers University to the highest of standards.

Emily Mahaffy (Rowing)

Mahaffy was a four-year varsity member of the Rutgers women's rowing team, where she has been a coxswain in four consecutive NCAA Championships with the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers has seen national finishes of seventh, 13th, 15th, and 14th since Mahaffy assumed a leadership role in and out of the boat "On the Banks." The Cherry Hill, New Jersey native capped her senior season with a Big Championships silver medal, finishing second with the 2nd Varsity 8 at the conference regatta as Mahaffy collected her second Big Ten Championships medal, joining her silver from 2021.

Werblin Award

The Werblin Award is given to any male or female student-athlete who, either as an individual or as a member of a team, received national recognition or won a national championship during the most recent academic year.

Josh Kuroda-Grauer (Baseball) – All-American

Grieder

Victoria Grieder (Rowing) – All-American

Grieder was awarded CRCA All-America Second Team following the 2024 season, which saw the Scarlet Knights place 14th in the country at the NCAA Championships as Rutgers qualified for a fifth consecutive national regatta. Grieder coxed the Rutgers Varsity 8, which placed 15th in the country at the NCAA Championships and fourth in the Big Ten Conference Championships in May. The Scarlet Knight teammates won the C/D semifinal at the NCAA Championships, edging No. 14 Virginia in a photo finish by 0.289 seconds. The V8 was fourth at Big Tens, less than a second behind Ohio State and a Big Ten medal. In the final tuneup for championship season, Grieder and Wood helped lead the V8 to the grand final of the Women's Eastern Sprints and took a silver medal behind then-No. 7 Brown. In the classroom, Grieder earned CRCA Scholar Athlete status in addition to Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Big Ten All-Academic honors.

Lily Wood (Rowing) – All-American

Wood rowed in the 6-seat of the Varsity 8 for women's rowing during the 2024 championship season. She was named All-Big Ten First Team after a fourth-place finish for the V8 at the conference regatta less than a second behind Ohio State and a Big Ten medal, and CRCA All-America honorable mention following a 15th-place national finish at the NCAA Championships, the fifth consecutive appearance for the Scarlet Knights on the national stage. Wood and the V8 won the C/D semifinal at the NCAA Championships, edging No. 14 Virginia in a photo finish by 0.289 seconds. In the final tuneup for championship season, Wood helped lead the V8 to the grand final of the Women's Eastern Sprints and took a silver medal behind then-No. 7 Brown.

On defense, Smith held a .983 field percentage playing at both center field and pitcher having only made one error at each position on 118 chances. Altogether she collected 67 putouts and 49 assists.  Along with her time in center field, Smith also tossed 130.2 innings with 93 strikeouts inside the circle. She finished the season 11-10 overall with a 3.54 ERA in 30 appearances with 21 starts and seven complete games In addition to her single-season RBI record, Smith has placed her name in the Rutgers record book second in career batting average, eighth in career RBIs (112), ninth in career triples (6), second in season home runs (19), fourth in season hits (69), seventh in season batting average (.408) and tenth in season doubles (14).

Holly Prasanto (Swimming & Diving) – All-American

Holly Prasanto was named a College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Second Team All-American for the 2023-24 season. Prasanto was among the 245 athletes from 42 institutions and the fifth Rutgers diver to earn First or Second Team All-America honors. The Sheffield, England native reached the consolation finals on 1M at the 2024 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. In her first NCAA appearance, advanced to the consolation final after taking ninth in the prelim round with a score of 285.20. She was .21 points shy of reaching the top eight. n the following round, Prasanto dove to a third-place consolation finish to land in 11th place overall. Her score of 299.20 was not only a career-best but the seventh-highest score in Rutgers history. She bested her previous high of 297.60 captured in late January in a dual meet with Villanova at the Rutgers Aquatics Center.

The junior Scarlet Knight qualified for the 2024 NCAA Swimming & Diving championship with a fourth-place finish on 1M at NCAA Zones to punch her ticket to the national championships. Prasanto captured a total score of 532.15 after 12 dives for Rutgers to send a member of its dive squad to NCAAs for a third straight year. 

Sincere Robinson (Men's Track & Field) - All-American

Sincere Robinson earned his second indoor Big Ten medal, taking home the silver at the conference championships with a distance of 7.88m (25’ 10.25”). He went on to qualify for this third-consecutive appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships, earning a sixth-place finish and First Team All-America honors. For his performance, Robinson was named the Mid-Atlantic Field Athlete of the Year for the indoor season. In the outdoor season, Robinson secured a Penn Relays championship in the long jump and finished third with a bronze at the Big Ten Championships.

Chloe Timberg (Women's Track & Field) - National Champion, All-American

All-American Chloe Timberg capped off a record-setting outdoor campaign, winning a National Championship in the pole vault. The Doylestown, Pennsylvania native set the NCAA Outdoor Championship meet and school record with her 4.71m (15' 5.5") height at Hayward Field. The win for Timberg gave the Scarlet Knights their first national champion in track and field since 1983 and the first women's NCAA Championship in program history. Her outdoor season also included capturing silver in the Big Ten Outdoor Championships and setting the meet and Franklin Field record at the Penn Relays. Timberg won the Big Ten Indoor Championship, also setting the meet record. She concluded the season with a third-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She was also named the Big Ten Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, Big Ten Field Athlete of the Indoor Championships and was recognized by the USTFCCCA as the Mid-Atlantic Field Athlete of the Year.

Dylan Shawver

Dylan Shawver (Wrestling) – All-American

Shawver delivered 27 victories this past season, which included a dominant 23-8 tech fall over Dylan Ragusin (Michigan) to claim the program's first individual Big Ten title since Anthony Ashnault and Nick Suriano both won in 2019. Shawver followed with a 4-2 mark at the 2024 NCAA Championships en route to a seventh-place finish and All-America laurels at 133 pounds. Shawver lead the team with 53 team points during the dual campaign and finished 2023-24 with a team-high 11 victories over ranked foes. For his efforts on the mat, Shawver shared the program's Ted Petty Most Valuable Wrestler Award with fellow All-American Yaraslau Slavikouski.
 

Yaraslau Slavikouski

Yaraslau Slavikouski (Wrestling) - All-American

Slavikouski shined in his first season at Rutgers after he arrived as a graduate transfer from Harvard, posting 19 wins in 2023-24. Slavikouski finished fourth at Big Tens and earned the No. 13 seed at last month's national tournament, where he ripped off five victories to become a NCAA All-American for the first time in his collegiate career. With his seventh-place finish, Slavikouski became the first heavyweight since Edward Scharer (1964) to earn All-America laurels for the Scarlet Knights. Slavikouski also secured NWCA All-America honors twice during his time with the Crimson. For his efforts on the mat this past season, Slavikouski shared the program's Ted Petty Most Valuable Wrestler Award with fellow All-American Dylan Shawver.

AD’s Excellence Award

Awarded to a student-athlete who attended Rutgers University - New Brunswick for at least four semesters, accumulated a 3.5 or higher GPA throughout the academic year, earned All-America honors or regional first-team accolades during the specific year and demonstrated leadership and character.

Guillermina Causerano (Field Hockey - First Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region, 3.89 GPA)

Causarano was a First Team All-Big Ten and First Team All-Region selection in 2023. Off the field, Causarano was well recognized for her academic achievements as a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, NFHCA National Academic Squad member, and a two-time member of the Academic All-Big Ten squad. A native of Salta, Argentina, Causarano has been a team captain the past two seasons. Last season, she led team with 12 goals, eight assists and 32 points. The output ranked seventh in a single-season at RU in goals and eighth in a single-season at RU in points. Overall, she has 16 goals and 12 assists over 61 career games. 

Iris Langejans (Field Hockey - First Team All-America, 3.53 GPA)

During the 2023 field hockey season, Langejans was named First Team All-American, Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year, First Team All-Region, Big Ten Player of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten (unanimous selection) and to the NFHCA's Senior Game, as well as the Synapse Sports Defensive Player of the Year and All-ECAC. Langejans was one of four national finalists for the prestigious Honda Sport Award for Field Hockey. The native of Almelo in the Netherlands impacted the game at all levels this season, starting all 20 games at back, where she helped RU allow just 1.4 goals per game. She added one goal and six assists this season, and the redshirt senior posted five goals and 15 assists in her 61 game Rutgers career. Off the field, Langejans was recognized for her academics as a member of the NFHCA National Academic Squad. She is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Collegiate Athlete Honor Society. 

Puck Winter (Field Hockey - Second Team All-America, 3.94 GPA)

Winter followed up her 2022 Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Year season with an outstanding sophomore campaign. Winter in 2023 was named a Second Team All-American, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, and was a First Team All-Big Ten and First Team All-Region selection after the fall season. A native of Deventer in The Netherlands, Winter was a presence on both ends of the field, as she led the nation with 12 defensive saves, and also posted eight goals, which was second on the team. She was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, to the NFHCA National Academic Squad and an Academic All-Big Ten selection. 

Shane Knobloch

Shane Knobloch (Men’s Lacrosse - First Team All-America, 3.53 GPA)

A First Team All-Big Ten honoree and a First Team IWLCA All-Region pick, Spilis finished the regular season with a team-high 47 goals to go along with 45 draw controls, 26 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers. The 2022 Big Ten Midfielder of the Year scored three or more goals in 10 games during the season, including a season-high six in RU's 15-8 victory over Georgetown back in February. A two-time Big Ten Midfielder of the Year this season, Spilis passed current volunteer assistant coach Taralyn Naslonski for the most in program history at 192 for her career.

Grieder

Victoria Grieder (Rowing - Second Team All-America, 4.00 GPA)

Grieder was awarded CRCA All-America Second Team following the 2024 season, which saw the Scarlet Knights place 14th in the country at the NCAA Championships as Rutgers qualified for a fifth consecutive national regatta. Grieder coxed the Rutgers Varsity 8, which placed 15th in the country at the NCAA Championships and fourth in the Big Ten Conference Championships in May. The Scarlet Knight teammates won the C/D semifinal at the NCAA Championships, edging No. 14 Virginia in a photo finish by 0.289 seconds. The V8 was fourth at Big Tens, less than a second behind Ohio State and a Big Ten medal. In the final tuneup for championship season, Grieder and Wood helped lead the V8 to the grand final of the Women's Eastern Sprints and took a silver medal behind then-No. 7 Brown. In the classroom, Grieder earned CRCA Scholar Athlete status in addition to Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Big Ten All-Academic honors.
