PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball mourns the loss of Mike Higgins, an All-American, team captain and four-year letterwinner from 1990-93, who passed away over the weekend at the age of 54.Â
Â
Higgins was a 1993 ABCA All-American who hit .370 during the season with nine home runs and a then-school record 56 RBIs. He also drew 39 walks and hit 20 doubles, which were both second all-time in the RU record books at the time.Â
In his four seasons as a Scarlet Knight, Higgins helped RU win three Atlantic 10 Tournament Championships, as well as three straight regular-season Atlantic 10 East titles and the outright Atlantic 10 championship in 1993. He was part of three NCAA Regional teams, representing Rutgers at the 1990 East Regional in Connecticut that saw RU defeat UConn, Maine, North Carolina and Georgia, the 1991 Central Regional in Texas and the 1993 Mid-Atlantic Regional in Tennessee.Â
A 22nd-round draft pick by the Colorado Rockies in 1993, Higgins played four seasons of professional baseball.Â
Higgins is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lori, his daughter, Ashley and his son, Mike, a member of the Rutgers football team.Â
