No. 13 Wrestling Splits Matches at Journeymen Jostle

FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. – No. 13 Rutgers wrestling (5-1) split its matches at the Journeymen Jostle, defeating Davidson (2-5), 49-3, before losing to No. 10 NC State (5-2), 27-11, on Sunday in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina.

The Scarlet Knights won 12 matches across their two duals, including multiple wins from No. 12 Dylan Shawver (133), No. 12 Joseph Olivieri (141) and No. 16 Shane Cartagena-Walsh (184). Olivieri delivered RU's signature win of the event, earning an 8-6 decision over No. 7 Ryan Jack, a 2024 All-American.

Rutgers worked nine bonus-point victories against Davidson, which included falls from Cartagena-Walsh, Olivieri, Shawver, No. 28 Ayden Smith (125) and PJ Casale (197). No. 9 Lenny Pinto (174), No. 20 Hunter Catka (HWT) and No. 31 Ryan Ford (165) added tech falls, while No. 29 Anthony White (157) collected a major decision.

Dual 1: No. 13 Rutgers 49, Davidson 3
Rutgers opened with three consecutive falls against Davidson. Smith worked two takedowns and a reversal in the first six minutes before sticking Brady Joling in the third period for his first pin of the season, giving RU a quick 6-0 lead on the Wildcats.

Shawver and Olivieri followed, with Shawver landing a double in the second period before catching Luke Passarelli on his back in the second period. Olivieri locked up Marley Washington in a cradle for the fall, as Rutgers led 18-0 through its first three matches.

No. 21 Andrew Clark (149) was upset at the buzzer by Anderson Heap, but the Scarlet Knights closed out the dual with six consecutive wins from 157 pounds through heavyweight. Ford and White worked back-to-back bonus-point victories, with Ford's 17-2 tech fall handing RU a 27-3 lead with four bouts to go.

Pinto jumped out with three takedowns in the first period and produced swipes in the second to highlight a 22-3 tech fall over Marc Koch to lock up the dual. Cartagena-Walsh followed with Rutgers' fourth fall of the day, pinning Josh Lange in the third period.

With the dual out of reach, the Scarlet Knights continued to score bonus points. Casale collected a fall over Daniel Elyash midway through the second period, while Catka ended the match with a 16-3 tech fall over DJ Springs for the 49-3 final.

Dual 2: No. 10 NC State 27, No. 13 Rutgers 11
Smith faced reigning NCAA Champion and No. 1 Vincent Robinson to open Rutgers' second dual. Smith was aggressive, allowing just two early takedowns while attempting several shots to hold Robinson to just an 8-3 decision.

The Scarlet Knights posted back-to-back wins for its first lead in the dual. Shawver faced Troy Howman, finishing a double with 13 seconds left in sudden victory for a 4-1 win.

Olivieri followed against No. 7 Jack in a back-and-forth match. Down 3-1 midway through the second period, Olivieri locked up a cradle for a takedown and three backs for an 8-4 lead through two periods. Olivieri fended off several attacks from Jacks en route to an 8-6 decision, putting RU up 6-3 through its first three bouts.

Rutgers lost its next four bouts, but not without some notable performances. Rookie Devon Magro (149) made his collegiate dual debut, landing a reversal in a 15-4 loss to No. 8 Koy Buesgens. Andrew Barbosa (165) earned the nod against No. 21 Will Denny, getting in on several attacks before a tough 4-2 loss. Barbosa's takedown at the buzzer in the first period, which would have given him a 3-0 lead, was wiped off after review.

After a pin at 174 pounds by NC State's No. 3 Matty Singleton, the Wolfpack owned a 20-6 lead with three bouts remaining.

Cartagena-Walsh attempted to spark a comeback, landing three takedowns in the opening period against Don Cates en route to a 19-4 tech fall. The win made it 20-11 heading into Rutgers' final two bouts, but a tough 4-3 loss from Casale against Cason Howle put the dual out of reach.

Catka faced No. 2 Isaac Trumble – a 2025 NCAA All-American – and worked several shots before losing by 9-1 major decision. NC State would win the dual, 27-11.
