Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls Short at Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Rutgers women's basketball team (10-15, 2-12 B1G) fell on the road at Iowa (18-7, 8-6 B1G) on Thursday night. JoJo Lacey led scoring for the Scarlet Knights with 11 points while also bringing in nine rebounds. 

How it Happened  

  • Destiny Adams scored the first points of the contest with a jumper. JoJo Lacey followed up with a three-pointer to give Rutgers the 5-0 lead.  
  • Iowa scored its first points at the 7:36 mark but RU retained the five-point edge, 7-2, thanks to a pair of free throws from Awa Sidibe
  • Mya Petticord cashed in on a deep ball of her own to put the Scarlet Knights ahead, 10-2 and force an Iowa timeout with 5:28 to play.  
  • Following the stop, the Hawkeyes shot a free throw and two minutes later a layup to cut the lead back to five, 10-5.  
  • Sidibe added another field goal, but Iowa matched the score with free throws with just over two minutes remaining.  
  • In the final moments Lisa Thompson hit her first jumper of the game, and the Hawkeyes added a three to end the opening period with RU still in front, 14-10. 
  • Lacey cashed in on her second three ball of the night to start the second quarter, but Iowa quickly responded with five consecutive points. Rutgers used its first timeout with 9:14 to go with a two-point difference, 17-15.  
  • Out of the pause, the teams matched scores, but the Hawkeyes hit a three to take their first lead of the contest, 20-19.  
  • Iowa continued the 11-0 run to extend its lead, 28-19.  
  • Chyna Cornwell ended the stretch with a shot from the charity stripe. She also closed out the half a jumper, but the Hawks still went into the locker room ahead, 28-22.  
  • Both teams traded buckets through the first three minutes out of the locker room, keeping a seven-point difference, 34-27.  
  • Just over the period's halfway mark however, the Hawkeyes hit a big deep ball to lengthen their advantage to double digits, 37-27 and force a second RU timeout.  
  • Adams fought through traffic for a layup just before another timeout on the floor, 37-29. 
  • Out of the stop, the Scarlet Knights found some momentum, outscoring the opponent 7-3 to put the game back in single digits, 40-34.  
  • Petticord kept it going with a three, but Iowa ended the third with five points in a row to take the 46-37 advantage into the final 10 minutes.  
  • Neither squad scored for the first three minutes of action, until the Hawks hit a three-pointer to stay in control. The home team added four more points before the 4:48 media timeout to extend the edge back to double figures, 53-37.  
  • In the final minute, Zachara Perkins and Lacey both netted baskets but Iowa ultimately came out on top, 55-43. 

Knight Notes  

  • Lacey has recorded double digit points in 12 games this season. She was 3-of-5 from beyond the arc against Iowa and has hit three or more threes in six contests this slate.   
  • Lacey also neared a double-double with nine rebounds to top the team.   
  • RU recorded more steals than the Hawkeyes, 8-6. Destiny Adams, Lacey and Chyna Cornwell all paced the team with two takeaways. 
  • Destiny Adams matched her season best three assists for the seventh time this season and second outing in a row.  
  • Mya Petticord also hit two threes, her ninth outing this season with multiple deep balls in a game.  

Looking Ahead  

RU will return to Jersey Mike's Arena to take on Northwestern on Monday, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. on BTN.
